MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Speaker location

Just re-fitting my speakers so thought I would take a photo to show yet another variation for speaker location.

Guy thats a great location... Not sure Ive seen that location before

what are those...3 inch or 4 inch

I was reading some time back about a new cool thing ... wirless speakes...Im guessing there battry operated with some kind of RF signal

I say old chap, those screw/bolt heads could use a lick of paint, dontcha know

tiny tiny speakers Guy

nice

There's an optical effect that makes them look even smaller than the hinge plate for the hood doesn't it? They are actually 4 1/2" across the cone, 5" overall when the covers are on them. They actually work very well there. They are not so far from one's ears - well, one of them anyway! - when one is snugged down in the seat.

And yes Bill, the bolt heads need some blacking with the touch-up brush. They also need adjusting to take that ripple out of the trim panel!

I may try that to get a full surround effect (4 speakers) as I got 2- 6x9s in the rear where everyone puts theres

Guy,
Not likely to get much in the way of spatial imaging, are you? Not that it would be an attainable goal in an open car...
David "headphones are illegal for your stereo and required for your phone" Lieb
David Lieb

I wear noise isolating ear buds, and I find that it greatly reduces fatigue and therefor makes me a safer driver. (My own little justification.)

Oddly enough, I'm more likely to hear sirens and other cars when driving my spridgets and wearing those ear buds THAN when driving my modern car with windows rolled up and AC on full blast and the stereo turned up to hear over the AC.
Trevor Jessie

David, - "spatial imaging" wasn't the objective. It was just somewhere neat to put them. They have been installed there for about 10 years now and seem to perform well enough.

Trevor - I also use ear-plugs, at least on any drive of more than 20 miles or so. Interestingly, they cut out tyre and wind roar to the extent that I can then hear the stereo better with them in. When I want to that is. I tend to only use the stereo on long journeys when away from built-up areas. I just hate the idea of imposing my choice of music on passing pedestrians and others in urban areas. But on a long motorway journey a bit of Cream or Steppenwolf certainly helps the miles pass by.

I always wondered why people had stereos in their midgets.

Until I changed out my diff...:)

The headrest of Miata/MX5 seats is, IMHO a great place for speakers.

The panel between the boot and cockpit means that the top is blocking them.

My stereo quit a year ago when I was driving home in a downpour from the water dripping on it. One of these days I'll get a new one. Maybe Santa won't bring me coal again this Xmass.

I would love to put some speakers in mine somewhere, but I would need a stereo first to make it worth while!

I have no stereo but the new Parot-cartelephonekit.
It doesnt play radio but does have a memorystick in to the screen on which loads of music can be downloaded.
Everything in the car but not yet connected...if only i had time...

Speakers are in the side of my refabricated-centreconsol.
And 2 tweeters under the dashboard.

I thought of Guys side speaker position but then guessed with the side of my seats infront of it it might block the music to much.

Time will tell if my setup is sufficient.

Arie de Best

Hey Arie,

Welcome to 1972,

I think your going to love that "Duel" (as in 2) 8 track players set up on your radio consel....You will love BJ thomas and Ann Murry's greatest hits playing at the same time

Parot-cartelephonekit...Yeah sure, If thats what you want to call it, HAHAHAAha

Guy - I like the idea of putting speakers there, hadn't thought of that location for them.

I have a small power amp sat at home waiting to be fitted in the boot when I get around to it. I'm planning just to put a minijack socket somewhere convenient so that I can plug in my phone (which is also my mp3 player and radio). That means the amp is secure in the boot and when I take the phone away, there's nothing to be nicked.

That's the plan, anyway...I've got all kinds of things I'm going to do eventually! Getting the Ashley top tidied up, resprayed and on is going to have to come first.

MarkH1

I am sure that MP3 - or whatever comes next - is the way to go. Unfortunately I have only just upgraded from push-button radio / cassette to CD stereo / FM radio. It will be a few years before I master the controls on that. I think from the development list the next item is due to be a CD stacker, but I suspect that I am not really keeping up with the rate of things. Anyway, I am pretty deaf already. Perhaps I will just wit until they develop the device that transmits sounds directly into the brain.
Guy Weller

Guy,

Can you hear me Now!

Thats the thing I fear is getting caught up in that hampster wheel of tech, Buy it today, replace it in 6 months... last year I was planning on spending a chunk of cash to buy a satalite radio and redo the radio system in the car, Now that idea is a total scrape, as to add to MattH1 the smart phone makes a much better idea as you can get the SATalite APP for the smart I phone, and you dont even need RCA jackes to hook it into the cars system as they are NOW BY law supposed to have a FM signal reciever...so you can now set it up wirelessly...no wires to hook up or dis-connect, just keep the smart phone in your pocket

The great thing about a smart phone, you can get the internet, pay bills, shop ebay, watch your dog getting on the couch while your gone, watch tv shows and movies, listen to anything in music, create you own radio station, ...watch the performance of your car....torque, horse power, g-forces gas milage, check for radiation from town to town, teather to a laptop and make youtube movies plus edit them on the go, daytrade the stock market, Hang out here on the BBS....

All from the drivers seat...LOL

Oh, and yes, use the phone function to order a pizza,

Im Just having a hard time justifying the $130 A Month price tag for the service

Prop

$130 a month

sod that

My iPhone4 is £45 a month, an almost unreachable data limit with unlimited txt and calls.

The passat is full kitted with Parrot handfree, full pioneer install and my ipod touch lives in there as a hard drive for my head unit.

The midget will NEVER see a stereo whilst i own it.

PeterJMoore

Prop,
You can't do any of those things if your DRIVING your car while sitting in the seat. Lol
Phil Burke

I have speaker pods sitting behind the seats. I like this arrangement as it eliminates the need to cut holes in panels:

Gryf, that where I stashed the tent lastime I went camping(only 2 weeks ago but trying hard to forget it) :)
Arie de Best

Peter,

I havent had to much time to look around, but thats thur sprint...Its $100 for unlimited everything package and an extra $30 for the ability to hook up the smart phone to the laptop computer as its modem,

they do have a basic package at around $70 that covers limited time and downloads...like 5 gig a month...or about 7 netflix movie downloads

Retro sound has recently come out with a quality radio that will fit in a Spridget.

They also have some new speakers with neodymium magnets so they are thinner than older speakers. They come in single voice coils and dual voice coils. They have a dual voice coil that will fit the original placement in our cars. I purchased a pair of 4.5" speakers for my TR6 and am very happy with them. Price was reasonable also. I plan on trying one of the radios and if it is as good as advertised I will get a second one for my Midget.
