MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Spigot bush 0 - Jeremy 1
I'm converting from Toyota 5 Speed to Datsun so had to get the old steel outer of the Toyota spigot bush out. I tapped it M14 and then used a slide hammer wired onto a bolt screwed into the bush. Half a dozen good whacks and it was out. Good to have that milestone behind me. Tomorrow I attack the bellhousing with a hole saw!

Why are you changing?...and what is happening to the Toyota box?
Dave O'Neill 2
I want the option to change back to 4 speed if I want to do some historic rallies and that's easier from the Datsun. I will be selling my Toyota kit at some time, two boxes, alloy backplate and a bunch of spares including a new clutch plate, release bearing and slave cylinder. Mail me at the address above if you are interested or we can chat at Spridget50 (in all that spare time I'll have!!!).

Does the Toyota 5 speed require cutting?
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72)
Yes.
Jeremy Cogman
I've not come accross the usage of this much at all before - what is the advantage of a Toyota over the Ford box? Are they easy to get hold of in the future?
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72)
No but neither will the Ford boxes soon enough
Bill
The Toyota was the first 5 speed conversion in the UK . The ford only took over because of the scarcity of Toyota boxes. Requires the removal of the cross member but the gearstick stays in roughly the same place without modifying the box.

Jeremy, I have a Toyota 5 speed in a Heritage shell,I believe they have a tranmission tunnel siutable for either the A series box or the Triumph ie 1500 box, I had to do no cutting at all except for a small hole beside the drivers seat to allow the speedo cable through. I had to drop the engine back one inch to get the gear lever to come through the original hole. Might be interested in one of the spare gearboxes Mike

Rich, IIRC the Toyota box normally used for the spridget conversion was difficult to find 20 years.
David Billington
I did my conversion about 10 years ago and the box came from Frontline. I subsequently picked up a spare box albeit without bellhousing. Mike, so you still have the car's original cross member in? Is your shell one for the Triumph box. I'd be interested to see that at Spridget 50. As soon as my car is back together and MoT'ed and I've got 24/5 out of the way I'll be looking to move on the Toyota stuff. Mail me if you are interested.

Jeremy, I may have a possible interested party up here... NO, not me! Mark.

Has any used the Toyota box with the Charles Ware conversion? I believe this pre-dated the frontline conversion and used a cast bellhousing to replace the original Toyota item. Is it possible to install the engine/gearbox unit together or do they have to be split? Derek
D.J. Stewart
Hi, I use a alloy bell housing from Rooster racing . Orginally from australia. I put the engine and box in together or seperately depending on mood or why it came out in first place. Regards.

Jeremy, email me and I will try to send you a picture of my car. I have tried to email you but it was returned as cannot deliver. Mike

Hi Jeremy Sorry to use this thread for an unrelated matter. Saw you had a midget steering wheel for sale elsewhere but unfortunately the email link didn't work. Wondering if it was still availble. Regards. John Mac

No probs, I could have sold that wheel ten times over, long gone I'm afraid.
