MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Spitfire big brake conversion.

I bought some modified Spitfire discs from Peter May and have just wasted 4 hours in the garage trying to get them to fit and wondering why they don't. It suddenly twigged that the modified discs had NOT been touched. They were completely standard discs.

The give away was the manufacturers stamps around the edge of the disc were clearly visible but should not have been there when they were reduced in diameter. So clearly they hadn't been modified.

Really ticked off by this as Peter May were supposed to be one of the good guys.

I foresee much heated discussion on the phone tomorrow.

Just for clarity...

did it come with the spacer that's needed between the hub and the brake disc or did you have your own spacer ?

This might be of help

And they do sell the spacer adapters thst fit in between the hub and the brake disc as well and you maybe able to get them Thus minispares as they are a sister sight to minimania

Hi Prop, from searching the archives two things need to be done to the Spitfire disc to make it fit with MGB calipers.

"....The Spitfire disc is 232mm and needs to be reduced to 229mm, while the caliper clearance can be achieved with slight adjustment to casting and the radius on the disc body....."

The disc I received, which was supposedly machined, was in fact still 232mm in diameter and the machining of the "top hat" section has not been done. So in all, they were a very expensive set of standard Spitfire discs.

Rob do you have (or even need) the small top hat spacers that go at the top of the kingpin under the trunnion? I know they're needed when using Wilwood calipers.
David Smith

Hi David, I've not got that far yet so not considered the trunnion spacer. Your question though prompted me to look at the trunnions I have put on the car and would you believe it I put one side on backwards!!!! It's a good job you asked.

This, of course, has no bearing on my current problem.

That sucks rob...

must have been a Monday or Friday when they got the disc to be modified

Record the conversation so we can all enjoy the show

if the discs are 232mm instead of 229mm what problem does that cause, do they foul on some part of the suspension or is it lack of clearance / depth in the throat of the calipers?
David Smith

Likely just a simple error in selecting the pick list parts for delivery. Or some unmodified discs got put in with the modified ones. Tiresome though, when you have wasted time trying to fit it!
GuyW

Yes, there is no clearance in the caliper throat. The other mod is the radius at the top of the top hat section needs cutting back to give some clearance to the edge of the caliper where the outer piston resides.

If you look at the HI Spec calipers website they do two types of Princess 4 pots in their Billet 4 range. The Princess 260 is a slightly modified version with added distance above the mounting lugs. They have added about 4 mm so bigger discs can be used on Escorts etc. This is probably enough to use Spitfire discs unmodified on a Midget. I was going to buy a set but chickened out by the cost and decided to get some modified discs from Peter May. Maybe I should have bought calipers from Hi-Spec?

I talked to David? at Peter May Engineering this morning. He was pretty adamant that the discs were modified but did concede there were two boxes of discs and he may have sent the wrong ones by mistake. I have to send them back so will do that asap otherwise I will loose yet another week.

I want to get a new set of tyres before Xmas and get it back on it's wheels before going back to work in January but need the discs sorting out to do that.

Guy nailed it... TIRESOME

This is the carp that drives me insane almost on a daily basis weather it's getting paint mixed for a job site or cheap material quality of a tool, or a home owner deciding to " help me before I arrive for a big supprise"

It seems everyday there is something like this were somebody else's issues become my problem ... and then it's past the buck around

Make them overnight the disc at there expense, there the ones that screwed the pouch, you didn't do anything wrong, you paid the bill, why can't they deliver what they advertised... cuz they couldn't get there thumb out of each other's ass, there ineptitude is now YOUR problem.... it's just bull sh*t

Life is becoming one daily screwing after another

Seriously... DEMAND THEY SEND THE DISC OVERNIGHT, you got a life to live things to do... that was a 2 day waste of your time cuz they had retard sandwiches for lunch the day they packed it in a box and shipped it out to you.
