MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Stack Gauges - Wiring

Hi,

Am fitting some Stack gauges to my MkIII midget and the accompanying literature recommends putting a 1 amp fast blow fuse inline on the 12V feed.

Have others done this with Stack or other after-market electrical gauges, if so did you put another fusebox behind the dash or use in line fuses?

Thanks,

Phil

I use inline fuses ...that way I only lose the one item instead of a large grouping and its easier to track down the offending circuit

But im sure there will be other thoughts

I know Daniel Stapleton has Stack gauges in his car, he could be on this bbs any moment.

Or you can just read it all in THE book. ;)

Arie de Best

Hi Arie,

I have 2 copies (2 different editions :) ) of the good book, and unless my eyes are failing it doesn't discuss the wiring for the 12V feed, only discussed senders and adaptors.

That's been useful enough, but this is the icing on the cake. I guess the fast blow fuse is to protect the gauges and wonder whether people actually use them (the wording on the installation sheet is "should" not "must").

I can only find 5x20mm 1 amp fast blow here in FR and so I'd need to get inline fuse holders to go with them too.

It's not a huge cost I'm a bit reluctant to mix and match fuse types on a car. There are 1 amp blade fuses (and I have a spare blade fusebox in my box of bits) but I'm not sure that they're fast enough if my assumption that it's about protecting the gauges is correct.

I'll double check TheBook (TM) again just to be certain...

Hi Philip, you could be right about not being described in the book about how to wire it up.
I know they are mentioned and photographed in the last (black) version.
Keep us updated!

Sorry a bit late with a reply. I don't remember reading this in the instructions but do know I've never fitted an in-line fuse to any of the gauges.
Daniel Stapleton

Thanks Daniel. The wording on the instruction leaflets is, to be precise :

"As a safety precaution, the +12V terminal of this product
should be fused before connecting to the 12V ignition
switch. We recommend using a 1 Amp, 3AG fast-acting
type cartridge fuse."

e.g. (and this is just an example - it says this on all the electrical gauges as far as I can tell from browsing the intarwebs)

It doesn't mention wiring in TheBook (TM) but possibly because I'm the only numpty who gets in a tizz about this kind of thing :/

Thanks again everyone.

Out of interest what did you take the power and lighting feed from?

I'm thinking of using a spare purple feed as the live feed, but doing it via a relay switched by the white feed from the ignition switch. I'm planning on reusing RW wires for illumination.
