MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Starter motor repair.
The starter motor on my 1972 midget has "stuck" a few times, the solenoid clicks when the ignition key is turned, but the engine does not crank...If I put the cat in gear & give it a push the car will then start o/k. Is this likely to be worn brushes in the starter motor, if so is this a possible diy repair, or is it just easier to buy a replacement starter ? Alan. |

From what i can remember it is not that hard a job look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GLbFjIVBM8 and the RSPCA might be interested in the cat in the gears! |

Sounds like the Bendix is sticking. Probably cos the teeth on it are knackered - you can get replacements... something like this... (depends on your starter motor) - and you'll need a spring compressing tool (which you can make or buy) to remove it from the starter. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9-Tooth-Lucas-M35G-M35J-Inertia-Starter-Motor-Drive-Gear-Pinion-Bendix-/280907498041?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4167644239 Just whack out the starter and have a look... its a 10 min job. |

Whilst all the above is probably correct just be aware that a poor contact by the solenoid can cause similar effects. Next time it happens try opening the bonnet and physically press the button on the starter solenoid, if that also fails then short the terminals on the rear of the solenoid with a big screw driver. This will spark abit when you do it hopefully so dont be frightened. f neither of there 2 techniques turn the engine then go ahead as described above with repairing the starter. |
