MG Midget and Sprite Technical - steady bar
After fitting a much stronger 1275 engine, the Maniflow exhaust hits the bottom when accelerating hard. I'm considering a Peter May steady bar and polyurethane suspension "rubbers". Is that a good solution? Flip |

For the same reason I added a stead bar at back of engine, onto top corner of the left hand footwell, which I reinforced. Solved the problem. I kept the standard engine mounts though as I was told the aftermarket replacements dont last well and my old ones were ok. |

What does it bolt to on the back of the engine? Do you reckon it is possible to "make one up" ? |

I made a steel bracket that bolts onto the two bell housing to engine block bolts. The steady I use came from some other car, I forget what It was MM perhaps? It is adjustable for length with a barrel nut and has rubber inserts to cushion any shock. T'other end fixes to a bracket bolted to the top corner of the footwell. |

I made one for the race car. I used a piece of angle-iron bolted to the two top bell housing bolts. The steady bar was from a Mini and I made some brackets to bolt to the top of the footwell panel, with a brace underneath. I will find some photos when I get home. Working away this week. |

I've got poly engine mounts because I found the modern original engine mounts were too soft. I had a type 9 with full maniflow exhaust system and after fitting the poly mounts found I had over 1/4" extra height under the 3 branch/exhaust joint. But they do come with more vibration from the engine presumably because they are stiffer than original. Rob |

A couple of photos of my steady. It was a standard Mini item, as was the small bracket at the engine end and fitted with poly bushes from the local Mini specialist. |

My version of the bracket at the engine end.

Thanks for the images, very useful. @ Dave, what are your two pipes for (where the heater should be) ? |
Tim Carter |
Tim That was a plumbed-in fire extinguisher. |

@ Dave, of course ;) |
