MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Steering column nut size

Sent off for a new steering column nut from Moss - ACH6001 - the only one they list - but when it arrived it turned out to be too big. The threaded part is approximately 9/16th wide whereas the threaded portion of my steering column is only 1/2" in diameter. As usual, the archives are pretty vague about sizes so can anyone tell me what size nut and what the thread size should be for my 1971 car?

I'll have a look when I get home

Hi Graeme,

This online PDF document might explain the difference.

Do you have an 'old' nut and, if so, what is the measurement across the flats?
Dave O'Neill2

I've got three later columns - two midget and one B - which have a thread size of 9/16" and a nut which measures 1-1/16".

My '67 B has a thread size of 3/4" and a nut which measures 1-5/16" across the flats.

AFAIK these are the only two sizes.

Just re-read my first post and I've cocked up the measurements. The new nut - too big is between 11/16th and 3/4 (thread diameter). the shaft is between 1/2 and 9/16th which would correspond to Dave's measurements. I'll try to find the old nut and measure AF. Chances are it's long gone as it was stripped when it came off. I have to find a Die or thread file to repair the shaft which is why I need to know what the thread pitch is.

Graeme, I might have 9/16 dies in UNF and UNC. I'll check over the weekend and drop you a text.

Cheers Mike.
I'm away in dingwall at the weekend - back sunday night but I'll be around all week.

Hi Graeme,

I have just realised that the link I posted doesn't work!!

But this one should be ok. You will see the steering gear manual which might be helpful.

Graeme, aah the Santa run... deep joy.. I did the one south a few weeks back. At least you should get a few amber necters up in Dingwall, just watch out for that A9..
Enjoy and I'll catch up with you next week.

Eventually found the old nut in a tin. it's 1-1/16th" AF and 9/16th thread diameter. Unfortunately stripped so I'm still none the wiser as far as thread dimensions goes. I've now ordered BHH2103 from the MGOC even though it's only listed for the MGB. Wonder why neither of the big suppliers acknowledge that the midget had differing nuts.
