MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Steering Rack Design
I have not been able to definitaviely diagnose the knock from the steering wheel when I drive over a rough piece of road. I and a fellow enthusiast have checked out everything. I now strongly suspect the rack is loose in the casing. Is the bore in the casing parallel along its entire length or does the rack on bear only at the ends. If the bore is consistent all the way along though I don't see this as wearing out. I have seen a YouTube video from India where racks were being reconditioned and they pushed PTFE bushes into both ends of the casing. If my casing is worn I wonder if I can turn up two, thin walled Nylon bushes, open out the ends of the casing with a die cutter and secure the bushes in the casing with epoxy. I could use the rack as an alignment jig.

Is this an early rack or a late rack? The early rack has some brass 'things' or one 'thing' that from memory looks like it makes contact with the rack bar and prevents clonking. I think it has a spring built into it. It's a while since I had a rack apart. I do have some rack parts, not sure if I have one of those. |

Back to basics----is there any up/down movement in the rack when you try to lift/lower it in the housing-there should be none on the drivers side and between 0 and a few thou. on the passengers side Drivers side is adjustable by shims Passengers side has already got a bush and new bushes are readily available and not at all expensive. |
