MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Strange Engine Number
Hi, I have a 1980 1500 midget which is now in a dismantled state prior to restoration starting. The engine number on the block is "RS 28046". this is on a seperate plate over where the original number would be stamped, therefore I am assumming that the engine has been refurbed or replaced, does anyone have any inkling of who/where this engine could have been worked on. There is no history with the car. Thanks |

Is the original number under the plate? I have a feeling some rebuilders used to apply their own numbers. Shardlow engineering certainly used to do that, but I doubt if that's one of theirs. |

At this stage i do not want to remove the plate that isperhaps covering up th original number |

Kevin, I have similar number on my remanufactured 1275: RS 89452. Also on a seprate plate. It comes from Ivor Searle company: http://www.ivorsearle.co.uk Hope this will help. Stepan |

Many Thanks Stepan, I will give them a ring to see if I can get more info from them |

Having contacted Ivor Searle, they confirm that this is their serial number type, however 28000's numbers were used approx 25 years ago & those records are no longer available. So the car had a recon engine but a fair time ago. A history is being slowly put together. |

Seeing as where they are based, l wonder if these are engines that were supplied via the MGOC? |
Guy W |
quite likely Guy - Searle's still do the engines for Moss. |
David Smith |
And for MGB Hive, thatīs where my engine came from... Stepan |
