MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Stromberg needles
Hi All, Given the discussion on inlet manfolds for single SUs.. Anyone have details of what needle I would need to put a stromberg 175 on a 1275 engine? Cheers tim |

Tim - Hard to say, and depends on the tune of your engine. Usually you start with something that uses the same carb, and has about the same airflow/power requirements. Over here, I'd use an MGB one, since they are easy to come by. While the B should have way more airflow and power than a 1275, it's so restricted in US form that it's about even to a stock/mild 1275. Don't know what uses them on your side; try anything that uses one carb and has about the power you realistically (no pipe dreams!) expect, or half a pair of an engine around twice the power. At least you only have one needle to worry about, so you can file it to get a good idea of where to go next. Easy to make blanks if you have a lathe or a lathe owning friend. ZS needles and other parts are expensive and always difficult to get here, with very limited selection of any non standard bits. I waited almost a year for a correct needle for a stock '77 MGB! FRM |

Not sure whether there are any cars that used a 1275 combined with single Stromberg 175.. Will have a look around.. In terms of tune, I am thinking 1275, stage 2 head, perhaps altered rocker ratio I have a wideband so could test once running Tim |

Tim - Maybe you could get the same ZS as that used on the US-spec midget 1500s. The inlet manifold would be the next challenge, but at least the carb would be about the right size. And for what it's worth, when I put a new needle in my carb a number of years ago, I used a 45Q and it's been fine. -:G:- |

Tim I suggest you take your search for this to a Triumph forum The Herald 13/60 had a CD150 as standard and no doubt those chappies expand the capabilities of their toys as we might ours, so a CD175 isnt too unlikely And the engine is basically 1300, not so very different in displacement from ours... So they may be able to help The Triumph Sports Six Club is one such resource (no I'm not a USER...) |

Good point about checking out triumph data.. I was previously a spitfire driver.. should have some specs. around here somewhere! Tim |

I've got a list of Zenith/Stromberg carb applications. I'll have a look and see if I can find anything. |

1500 US midget uses CD150. Displacement doesn't really matter, power out = airflow in, which is why I said I'd use a US MGB. Maybe TR6 would do, half a TR6 ought to be about a decent 1275. But, if you have a WB, it ought to be easy. Bill's suggestion is good. FRM |

Dave, Any info would be good.. Anyone know if the manifold to carb flange is the same for the stromberg as SU? tim |
T Dafforn |
TR4 uses same gasket for HS6 & ZS CD175 FRM |
Fletcher R Millmore |
FRM TR6s in the UK didn't have carbs ;o) |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
Tim AFAIK the manifold flange is the same. Unfortunately my ZS info isn't as comprehensive as I thought. It lists a vast array of British cars and LCVs fitted with Zenith, Stromberg and Solex carbs, giving carb make, type/model no., carb reference number, manufacturer's part no., gasket pack no., and needle valve pack code & part no., but no reference to needles. |

I guess Burlen may know, I'll ask them tim |
T Dafforn |
Yep, forgot about that! Once saw a TR5 the way it should be, officially we got TR250 w/ZS. Did you have ZS on TR7? Or XJ6 or 12? FRM |
Fletcher R Millmore |
I think TR7 had ZS. Earlier Jaguars had SU, but later ones had ZS, I believe. |

Burlen have no record of strombergs being used on an A-series.. Anyone any thoughts? Tim |

They wouldnt how about triumph 1300s? or online at TSSC, surely they have faster than average drivers FGS I had a mate with a passion for fast Heralds fergawdssake And Spitfires, surely there were some brave Spitfire drivers OR see if Peter Burgess has any idea, he will give advice if he can I'm sure |

Have you looked at Win SU, I'm not sure if it covers Strombergs or not... I can check as I now have the programme on the PC at work. Mark. |
