MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Stud broken - what to do?

Finished reassembling kingpins this morning. Feeling good. Then...

Tightening last wheel nut and the stud sheared - flush with the hub.

Unbelievable.

My inclination now is just to take it to MOT garage and ask them to change it.

Will it need a new hub? Do they screw out from he back after removing the disk? Any suggestions appreciated.

Feeling pretty p1ssed off actually......

Don't panic, Captain Mainwaring. IIRC, the studs are a friction fit. Firm but gentle taps from a hammer (using a suitable drift) should see the damaged remnant pop out from the back of the hub flange. I believe the stud part number is BTA339. The new one should slide in place from the rear of the hub flange - and, with the wheel in place, tightening the wheel nut will bring the stud fully 'home'.

Unfortunately it looks like the discs are the round boss ones so the disc will have to be removed in order to get the stud out, that means the hub will have to come off the stubaxle, luckily not difficult. Best to inspect all the studs as the other may be damaged also.

if you need a stud this weekend, I have some here...

Thanks for input. Feeling a bit better.

As I just refitted this hub on the stub axle (this morning) I know it was a v tight fit.
So I don't expect to get if off again without a hub puller. Buying for circa £30 from Moss probably cheaper than getting the garage to do it.

David thanks for offer. Very kind. Its not urgent so will buy the studs next week with a hub puller.

Still bl00dy annoying as I thought I was done and ready for MOT.

I've never had to use a hub-puller to remove the front hubs from my midget - the bearings are 'only'(!) a taper fit onto the stub axle.

Method: Back off the hub nut so that it's outer face is flush with the face of the stub axle's thread. Gently apply one or two sharp hammer taps to the flush face of the nut/stub axle. The shock impact should free off/release the taper joint of the hub from the stub axle whilst not causing thread damage.

Once the disc/hub has been removed from the stub axle, if you need to remove the disc from the hub (in order to get to the rear of the broken stud)then slightly more 'spirited' hammer blows around the circumference of the disc might be required - carefully - to free the inevitably rusting joint between the disc and the hub. But go careful - too heavy handed and you might crack the disc.

A Hock,

The bearings aren't a taper fit, the bearing bores and stubaxle journals are straight. It's possible of the stubaxle journal ODs are at maximum tolerance and the bearing ids at minimum it might be difficult to assemble.

Easy job to change the stud as already mentioned, but what you really want is 9" discs :-)

David Billington,

Thanks for putting me right - in my mind's eye I was confusing the tapered 'distance piece' with the actual face of the bearings which, as you point out, are parallel.

Everything else I mentioned was correct (I think) except that I forgot to mention that before separating the disc from the hub (with the use of hammer blows) there's the small matter of removing 4 bolts holding the disc and hub together!

When I snapped a front wheelstud, closer inspection of the survivors showed that they were all waisted and ready to go the same way.

And the other front wheel studs were not much better either.

Definitely recommend changing them all while its apart. They don't cost much.

Thanks all.

A Hock - you were right. Gentle tapping pulled the hub fine. This is how I removed them originally to replace the kingpins - but the new stub axles seemed a much tighter fit requiring quite some persuasion to get the hubs on - so I just assumed they would need a puller. Thanks for putting me right.

All now disassembled, broken stud is removed and waiting for Moss to open Tuesday. Will replace all four as I have the hub apart.

Thanks again to all who have helped. This is a great place!
