MG Midget and Sprite Technical - The blues...

My '79 will soon be off to the body shop for a respray. I have always liked deep/dark blues, but there are a lot to choose from.

Show me your blues...

I particularly like the dark blue of the AC Cobra attached!

R McGeown

Cobra looks a bit bling - is it metallic? Personally I mostly think metallics look wrong on a midget. I'd go for the dark blue of the third Midget coupe, the one that lives in Scotland.

David Smith

This one is very nice, its a subaru blue

R McGeown

BMW Montreal blue looks good - rather like the Scottish Jacobs midget - which incidentally looks spiffing.

Is it tailored bodywork or Ashley variant?

Mark O

Or stuarts blue 4wd V8 midget

A de Best

that cobra blue is a superb colour. Go for it
graeme jackson

not dark but this is the blue I'd use, IMO lighter blues suit small, light, fun, sports cars, darker blues are for more serious cars

(below) the paint on this cheap (as new) car also keeps it colour well, I've seen examples of this model often and all have great looking finish despite some cars living outside 24/7, 365/6 (in all colours) for 15+ years

not the best photo - it looks better in the metal

Nigel Atkins

No no Nigel......Iris or French blue for a Midget if a lighter blue.....
Mark O

Mark,
for solid chrome bumper cars yes but for split chrome and 'rubber' bumpered cars that Suzuki blue would look great or on another small, light, sports car, light colours for fun, darker colours for more serious

(wider wheels, etc., ;D )
Nigel Atkins

I'd go with Arie's choice, Stuart's Midget.
Bill1

There was a Healey Dark Blue used on the 100S. Non-metallic. It gets my vote.
Trevor Jessie

I do like the blue on Stuart's and the Subaru blue, if went dark blue id contrast with a silver or ivory/off white stripes, or sills maybe.

Not a fan of the Suzuki, but maybe thats just because its on a Suzuki box.

R McGeown

Tahiti blue i think

S G Macfarlane

nothing wrong with Suzuki and particularly their paints (and engines) they also made the modern Spridget when Rover/MG didn't

Stuart's car looks good in that colour but I'm sure all would admit it's dark blue on a serious looking car

appropriate stripes would help on dark blue

how about this for a Suzuki then (sorry it's red, 80% of official UK car were red and the other 20% were silver)

same width and height though not as long as as a Spridget, same claimed power (but actually more) and (restricted) top speed, RWD, pack-away hood but with all the extras you expect on a Japanese car - 5-speed, PAS, 4 disc brakes (ventilated front), air-con, retractable heated rear window and a lovely 3 cylinder, 657cc, DOHC, 12v, EFI and intercooled turbo engine

(scan of old photo so quality isn't brilliant)

Nigel Atkins

I'll dig out a photo of My frogeye [arked behind my Niece's old Cappuccino (when I get home).

What a depressing thread....blue cars are soooo sad.... imho

But ... I got to back Aries play..thats the only blue id use

Hockey in St. Louis anyone, the town is known for its blues and brews music scene

Rob Armstrong

Of course this thread is completely subjective, I just wanted to see some blue inspiration. :)
R McGeown

dark blue can look good with silver to lift it

how about another BL blue

Nigel Atkins

Peugeot Miami Blue [the car that is]

D Plumb

Ah well Rob, if it is just examples of colour that you want for inspiration, then a dark shade of blue like this would be lovely.

Guy W

careful with Rob's blue as you can get a blister on the bonnet

I had a Ford Capri that the next owner had resprayed and it showed how good the paint looked when new - Ford Cobolt blue - not an easy colour to spay though, it's similar to the Cobra but not as pinky/purple (to my eyes on my monitor)

Teal blue is another MG colour and the Ice Blue or Riviera Blue or Aqua

ETA: very nice Guy, is that you modelling the colour
Nigel Atkins

Isn't she more of a tan colour Guy?

I wonder if she has matching collar and cuffs?
Lawrence Slater

Teal Blue?

Dave O'Neill2

My colour vision isn't what it used to be.

Is this dark blue or black?

Lawrence Slater

I was told this is Midnight Blue.

Jonathan Severn

Freshly painted Teal Blue.

(with Tan seats, Lawrence)

Guy W

could be the surroundings in the photo, the light to the camera and/or its settings and/or my eyes and my monitor but my Teal blue MGBGT was nearer to Dave's A30/35 than the brighter looking blue on Guy's freshly painted car and so does the 70s sales brochure I have featuring a Teal blue BGT

how about using (was it called flip?) paint that looks different colours at different angles as they did on the MGF and TVRs
Nigel Atkins

My colour vision isn't what it used to be.

Is this dark blue or black?

Silly girl,

Those stains wont come out with just a lite spray and wash cleanser....they have to be bleached out

:-/

Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

The reason I referred to my Teal Blue car as "Freshly painted" was exactly because it was at that stage rather brighter & lighter than the true Teal blue. I rather liked the colour.

Unfortunately, as I did like the more vibrant colour, over a fairly short period of time the colour toned down and is now much closer to what Teal blue is supposed to look like.
Guy W

The blue on the Cobra at the top of the thread looks like the Ford Imperial Blue used on my wifes SportKa.

I'm a blue fan from way back nearly every MG I've owned has been dark blue and there's been a few over the years I'm not a real fan of metalic paint on Midgets it just doesn't look proper and the solid colours are a lot easier to patch up when that little scratch happens
BUT having said that if the bodywork is straight and it's a good spray job almost any colour looks good
My personal favorite is the dark blue off Marina's
It's called Vairegio Blue and when it's polished up it looks great
You do realise blue is a soft colour and scratches easily and unfortunatley the darker it is the easier it This is a pic of my old racer in Vairegio Bluescratches

William Revit

Another sorry I just like the colour

William Revit

William... I like that blue in tour 1st photo

Good luck with the heat

So I am almost convinced I want Subaru Rally Blue Pearl. I want that fun factor in the color as well as the drive!
R McGeown

still seems quite sober to me, how about bright orange or bronze for fun factor
Nigel Atkins

Prop
Crazy isn't it ,you guys getting your nads frozen off and down here it's toasty warm
I'm fairly lucky where I am on the coast as the ocean sort of cuts the extremes out of the weather but it has been fairly toasty this last week all the same
They've got bushfires going in Victoria and South Aust. but we havn't had any big ones here this year yet
The Australian open tenis is on at the moment in Melbourne and they had to stop play yesterday because it was over 40deg C and then today they had some rain for a while crazy
cheers willy
William Revit

When we had a corvette we did it blue, i liked that shade.
Can't remember what is was called though.

Alexander Sorby Wigstrom

Not light but very dark Blue (midnight-Blue?)
Me like!!

A de Best

I really like that one Arie :)

Looks like a little Jag
Rob Armstrong

My 1970/71 is Teal Blue, the perfect blue in my opinion. Here it is pictured outside the family cottage in Boscastle Harbour.

Dominic Excell

I no longer have a Midget, but my last one was Midnight Blue.

Mike Howlett

Been playing with Ele today, new alternator, removed bumper and mounted indicators and number plate. Went for a 30 minute spin - loved it!

She may yet stay yellow! :)

R McGeown

What's in a colour? As long as it goes, that's really all I care about these days. :).
Lawrence Slater

I had a bright yellow car for three years and I loved the colour

except for having to clean it more frequently and the blackfly in summer
