MG Midget and Sprite Technical - The cutting & carnage continues!

I managed to splatter-weld the front of the N/S toe board/sill together enough for everything to hold together when finally I removed the scaffolding board that ran the length of the car, then the some of the floor was removed.

I decided to tackle the rear bulkhead, the rear of the sill doesn't have much to hang onto, so I figure slapping new metal at the back would at least give me a strong square to hold everything together when I removed the rest of the floor.
Turns out, it was 3 layers of steel.... and a mess underneath

Flyster

I'm sure what lies beneath that last piece of bulkhead isn't gonna be good, what I'm thinking is a new spring hanger bracket, I doubt what's left isn't any use anymore, someones welded across one of the bolts anyway, so that's gonna be a pig to remove.

What I'm wondering is....

how do I keep the spring in position when I remove the bolts/floor, I've left the axle in position, but I reckon it'll move about easily onece I remove all the fixings. what does the front spring bracket attach to? is it the floor?

I'm sure I didn't turn to alcohol on an evening until I started this project!!!!

I clicked on the first image and thought, ah, good luck, doing it a different way to me but looks good. Clicked on second and third image "Holy crap!" I thought mine was bad.

I have just done these bits on my car, mine is stripped making my life a bit easier, but the spring hanger bracket thingy (the bit that is attached to the spring and then bolts to the floor) is very useful for clamping the new spring hanger in place whilst you weld!

Not entirely sure how you would remove the spring tho, sorry... Got the next two days off work so had some wine and brain isn't working!

Right behind you and feel your pain re: the rust. Many bits of my car had three or four layers of steel too!

Gez...

Have you ever heard of bondo...you could have covered up that mess and it would have looked like new. And the MOT man never would have been the wiser

Good luck

The guy that owned my Frog before had shares in a filler company and yes it did pass MOT's.
I took 11 Stone of filler off the vehicle when I stripped it. I know it was that heavy because I bagged and weighed it. The sills were 1/2 inch thick in the stuff and I always wondered why the bonnet was so heavy until the filler came off !!

Your PO must have been a transplanted red neck yank from here in the states

Flyster - do you have the new floor and rear bulkhead yet-- i have some to sell!!
Mick - still wiring!!

I think you're in the area where a new body shell might be economic

Where is the fun in economic? :)

I've got 2 weeks off work from tomorrow Malcolm, they'll be a lot of cutting, grinding, swearing and wine drinking going on!

The mess has been covered over several times Prop, I figured I'd try get it back into some kind of reasonable shape... that's before I started cutting into it... it's one hell of a first project!

No video but I've taken lots of photo's as I go... but all that does is produce evidence of my foolhardiness!!!

I already bought a floorpan and rear bulkhead Mick, did you get yours from Moss? can't you return it for a refund?

I did think about a bodyshell C L, but I'm with Arie on that one, I origionally bought the midget to tinker with more than actually drive, a new bodyshell costs a fortune and I'd prob spend as much time stripping and transferring everything over, on top of that I don't have space for 2. I've given myself a very small budget to get the main structure into some kind of reasonable shape, if it doesn't work out, I haven't lost a lot and the outlay was worth the experience..... although after saying that... I have eyed up a few bodyshells on ebay, all in better condition and cheap enough... if I had a tow bar on my little van, I could be singing to a different tune!
