MG Midget and Sprite Technical - The Dreaded Starter Clunk
My MK 3 midget had been laid up for a year time to brush the cob web's away. After checking oil & water, a turn of the key and a clunk noise from the engine.A new battery had been fitted so that was ruled out.All electric connection's were cleaned,ie battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter and battery earth strap to bulkhead. My next stop was this site's forum. Earth strap seemed to be the favourite, mine was on the front eng.mount removed, cleaned and refitted I also fitted an extra one, starter to heater/bulkhead.Still clunk. Although the starter has a square shaft that turned freely I took the starter off just to make sure the worm drive was free it was. Only thing left seemed to be the solenoid was it defective? The only part I hadn't cleaned was where the solenoid bolt's to the bulkhead after cleaning both faces with a bit of emery cloth it was vrooom vrooom. Thanks for the various members for putting me on the right track. |

thanks for reporting that, it is the type of thing that can be forgotten or overlooked my starter solenoid was only held one side so I drilled a hole and put a screw in on the other side but it wasn't needed |
