MG Midget and Sprite Technical - there is hope...

This morning i got a few hours in the garage, got the door gaps lined up, the inner sill taked on, gaps checked, then inner sill plug welded on.

It all looked good so i clamped on the outer sill to take alook. Im really excited about what i saw:

Well done Rob!

I,m sure you are giving hope to many people as well as me.

Thanks Carl

What stage is your project at? Got any photo's?

This is how the door, a-post and sill gaps look at the moment...door obviously needs re-skinning:

You get a warm feeling when it looks like you're making progress don't you. Here's mine with the new floor, inner and outer sills and spring hanger in place.

and with the heel board welded in and tidied up.

Good work, thats much neater than mine!

My begginer welding didnt go to plan, even after grinding its a mess, at least the carpet will cover it all!

Looks like you have replaced the sills too, have you a photo diary of your work?

I jsut noticed you've welded the spring hanger to the floor...I didnt doo that - should i have done it?
Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

Can't hurt to weld the spring hanger to the floor. Still do-able from where you are at; just drill a hole through both the floor and the plange and plug weld it up.

i'll make sure i do that!

Pete's idea is a good one but I'd use a Spot weld removing drill so you only go through the floor. That'll give you the spring hanger to weld to - much easier IMO than trying to weld into an empty space.

My welding isn't that neat. What I've found is a flap wheel on the angle grinder takes the excess weld down much more effectively than a grinding disc.

And yes, I've been photographing the work as I go along. So far, I've replaced the drivers side inner and outer sill, the whole floorpan, the drivers side spring hanger and the heelboard on that side. I've also replaced the outer rear panel on the drivers side (behind the springhanger) and the driver and passenger side outer front panel (below the inner wheel arches).
Still to do:
The drivers side front inner wheelarch is to be replaced.
Both A post covers
Both doors - I have the drivers side - still looking for new old stock passenger door.
Both rear outer wings.
The rear panel and the two boot floor fillets that close off the rear wings.
At the rate I'm going I don't realistically expect to be ready to paint until next spring.

Graeme - Have you tried Robert McGillivrey near Lanark for a door? He's helped me out on a few occasions with parts. If you look on the MASC for sale board, he's advertising a trailer at the moment. You can get his contact details from that if you wanted.

Cheers, Matt
