MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Threaded plastic blocks for door pull

All the talk of doors and door pulls on another thread has prompted me do something about the door pull on my ’72 midget with the later style trim. I’m missing the square plastic insert that act as a captive nut. I’ve bodged a solution and it doesn’t work too well, I could really do with sourcing the correct fixing. I’ve tried the usual suspects and they reckon they are no longer available. Any idea where I could get them?

thanks

I bought mine at LeaceyMG last year (for fitting to the new door they fitted the year before that had none inserted, cos I didn't have any in before the accident)

Worth a call

However before that I used those clip-over self tapper retainer nut thingys in the hole

Couple of ideas, Rob. Do you have the square plastic parts like that for licence plate brackets? I don't know if they are the same size or not.

The other solution I can think of is to keep the existing bit, drill or make the original hole larger and put one of those tapered plastic drywall inserts for hanging pictures on in. Then you can put the screw in. The original plastic bit will act like the wall and the tapered bit like the original part.

I don't have any way of posting pictures on here as a picture is wort 1000 words as they say but maybe someone else might.

Bit like Clive's suggestion, but you can get threaded captive nuts that fit using a pop rivet gun. The threads would probably be metric though.

Guys,

Thanks for the comments, I'll try Leacey MG first but if they can't help I will look for alternative hardware bearing in mind your suggestions. My previous attempts have all been rather 'temporary'

David,

thanks for your kind offer, I think they do come out but not certain. I've sent you an email, think I can work out the adress :-)

Rob, yes they do come out. You squeeze the little tabs behind the insert and they'll come out.

Rob, you have email (and mail too..)

unfortunately Leacy's do not have this part, I tried to get one last week. Using the Moss part number, they tried to give me a much smaller version, which is far too small. Moss also say that the part is no longer available. In the end I cut a small plate a couple of MM thick which lies in a convenient channel in the door, I bolted it to the door using a shallow headed bolt and using a pre-drilled hole nearby, and then I drilled a second hole in my plate in the same position as the plastic plug and using the same self tapping screw to fix the handle in place. it seems fairly secure and the window still winds up and down.
Hope all this makes some sort of sense, I cant take a picture as the door card is now in place.
