MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Threads for captive studs holding fuel pipe.

SWA 71 car. There is a u-shaped section of rigid fuel pipe going over the rear axle. It's secured by P-clips onto captive studs.

What is the thread of these studs? The original nuts were badly rusted and only came off with mole grips, nothing in my various bolt boxes seems to fit as a replacement.

I didn't think it was anything special. Just a small UNF. Something like #10.

UNF or UNC? I tried a thread gauge on the studs and concluded 3/16 UNC, bought some but they don't fit.

If anyone knows for sure, pls speak up.

Adrian,
unless I misunderstand, according to MGOC Spares on-line catalogue and Paul's 'Translate Fastner' page the nuts that go on to them are GHF200 - NUT, PLAIN, FULL, 1/4" UNF X 7/16".

You could perhaps confirm this by checking the factory parts catalogue or cross-referencing with other reliable sources.

Possibly the rust on the studs has made gauging more difficult so a good clean up is required before fitting new nuts.

I was going to suggest 1/4" UNF earlier, but I didn't have a parts catalogue to hand.

Now that I do, I can confirm what Nigel said.

Useful links, thanks. I agree with your reading of the diagrams, but the remains of the nuts that came off were smaller, more like 3/16 internal dia than 1/4. So either it's not standard or the studs have rusted enough to have had something mangled onto it a long, long time ago before my ownership.

Or I could just drill them out from the top and replace.

The only one on my car that did not snap is 3/16 UNF (10-32). The others I replaced with 1/4 UNF as that's what I had to hand.

It was indeed 10-32 UNF, fitted this afternoon. Thanks all.
