MG Midget and Sprite Technical - timing chain

hi all
had a rattle in engine of my 65 midget which when i listened with stethoscope sounded like it was louder from timing cover. stripped it all down and cannot find anything obvious. how much play should be in chain.
thanks bob.

never seen measurements quoted and not sure wear is checkable that way; replace chain and cogs, they're cheap enough.
David Smith

There is essentially no play in the chain when new. If it has been hitting the cover it is seriously worn out. If it is a single row the rubber O-rings that are a "sort of" tensioner are always bad.
