MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Timing on 75 Midget

I have just finnished my 75 midget. It funs fine, but only getting about 22 MPG. I left the timing as when I bought it and was set for 4 deg BTDC. I have a Weber DGV 5A carb and a 43D4 dist. with headers and 2 inch exhaust pipe. What should the timing be set too?

RC:

With that setup I would start at 10 degrees btdc ( the no-emmissions setting for the engine) and maybe bump it up to 12-14-16 btdc depending on how she runs.

I currently have a Weber 32/36 dgv/4-1 header/2" exhaust at 10 btdc. Only complaint is an irritating hesitation at low rev acceleration that some archive material on this website says can be corrected by carb alterations, but as I'm just getting to know my Weber I'll spend time time driving at various ( 12-14-16-18 etc) btdc timing settings before I disassemble my carb.

She runs pretty good when I leadfoot, at 10 btdc and I'm getting 26/30 mpg city/hwy.

Can't complain other that that hesitation blip on the throttle.

Thanks for the information. I will try 10 btdc and work out a little at a time tomorrow. I have read where you can advance to where it pings then back off a little.

I have a 75 with Calf engine. The manual indicated 10BTDC. I think I have it more like 12 or 14 at this point.

Are you sure your mixture is set correctly? And that the choke is working right?
