MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Toyota Gearbox Diagrams and Part Numbers

For those with a Toyota T50 Gearbox fitted, I came across this info on www.toyotapartszone.com. To access the pages select 'Toyata Spares', then, 'Corolla', '1983', 'Manual', '5 speed' and 'Power Train/Chassis'. The part number displayed will have two asterisks - put '33' in their place and you can converse with the Toyota parts operative. As a guide, use £ in lieu of $ to the prices shown.
I could'nt find the rear rubber mounting in the lists but '12371-33010' is the item.
As we know a lot of the parts are no longer available but I managed to get the shift lever rubbers OK.

Can the T50 fit into a 1500 without cutting?

If I recall its a hard fit with alot of mod work on a 1275....In fact I think it was easier from what ive read to put in a toy 4age with the t50 then the t50 by itself

Now in OZ, HEY maybe Mark T can help us out

...they have a toyota T2/T3 box that makes for a perfect conversion on the 1275...you got some mode work similat to the rivergate kit...but a far easier fit then a T50....after all they hook that box up to the full size thundra pick up truck with a 300 Cubic inch V-8

FWIW, I put the Frontline-supplied & rebuilt T-9 conversion into my 1500 midget last year and it shifts just like a friggin Mack truck. Stiff into every gear, wants a "Manly touch" to make her behave. I also happen to own and drive a 1982 Toyota Corolla wagon (mint condition, only 216xxx miles) with the T-50 in it and it is the smoothest shifting, sweetest, quietest box I've ever had the pleasure of driving, Literally. I would NOT repeat the install of a T-9 on my next project. I don't exactly dislike it mind you, I just wouldn't do it again. FWIW.

Also for the likes of autotesting you will find the location of reverse on the T50 much more natural, quicker and less prone to crunching than the Ford stuff. But FL have stopped supplying the parts for that now.

Derek, thank you for that information.

T50 requires some cutting, a notch is to be taken from the chassis leg to ensure clearance for the clutch slave cylinder.

If i remember in the next couple of days i will photograph all the parts that require modifying to make a comfortable fit.

that would be cool peter...id love to see that. would that be for a 1500 or a 1275?

I may have just stumbled across a fix for the speedo drive problems too.

But i shall experiment before i post anything definite online.

:D

Pete,
I look forward reading the results of your stumble. I was looking at a right angle drive from the box as the means of fitting the speedo cable and keeping it the tunnel but even that looks pretty tight. Someone I know fitted two right angle drives to get over the problem!

Prop. The T2/3 box is the preferred choice.

Derek,

The problem is getting ahold of the 90 degree drives.

I think i am correct in saying they are pretty much unobtainable apart from some guy in australia.

Pete,
try Speedy Cables, here: http://www.speedycables.com/accessories.html

Graham, i believe to have the complete kit from them for a 90 degree drive and cable to suit is about £100

The other option is the guy in Australia who cn get the Cessida 90 degree drives that are a direct fit.

Im just exploring other "cheaper" options at the minute as the budget for my own car is based entirely on how much time I am willing to spend on it.

but then again, the cheapest option is just a hole with grommet and run the speedo cable inside the car. I would rather it was hidden though

Derek, very useful parts information, I have a T50 that I'm thinking of pulling apart to check over next winter.
I have a Haynes manual should you need information, and I am not that far from you.
Mine is fitted without notching the chassis rail, so that should not be a given.
I am wondering how are other peoples speedos with the T50 ?? .....mine reads very slowly.

Ian, is your slave cylinder on the drivers or passenger side of the bellhousing???
PeterJMoore

Derek,

Great link - thanks very much. The rear mounting is under 'Tool/Engine/Fuel' and then '8. Mounting'.

I also have an extract from the Haynes Manual, but to have all the part numbers is a real bonus.

Ian,

The A-Series gearbox speedo drive ratio is 2.6:1 and the T50 is 3.5:1, so with everything the same the speedo will read just 74% of the correct reading - yes a bit slow!

By the time I fitted a 3.9 diff and 185/70 x 13" tyres, the only solution was a re-calibration (this is on a Minor that had a 4.55 diff and 145/80 x 14" tyres originally, so the T50 would have read only 65% of the correct speed and mileage!)

Pete, my slave cylinder is in the drivers side, I have about 10mm clearance from the chassis rail.

Richard, that sounds about right, I usually run a 4.2 diff + 165/70-13 tyres.
I was wondering if Toyota do any other speedo drive gear but I have seen any discussion on that subject, any ideas ??

Derek, I believe most people find the standard rear gearbox mount too soft, and so change it for other types. On mine I cut out the soft squidgy rubber parts and substituted with hard cotton reel type AV mounts, reasonably simple job and very robust.

Ian, thanks for the alternative rear mount solution. Much cheaper as well!
Thanks for the offer of the Haynes but since the box has been rebuilt I hope I won't have to go that way!
