MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Toyota T50 1275 Spigot Bush
I currently have the engine and gearbox out of the car, and would like to replace the special 1275 flywheel spigot bush for the Toyota T50 gearbox. I have some pictures, but does anyone have a set of dimensions for the bush please? I can make one, or if there is a source of supply, where is it please? As a last resort I can measure the existing one, but it is rather worn! Richard |

Charles Ware Morris Minor Centre tel.01173003753 may still have some old stock. The part number is 5G35. The parts dept guy is pretty helpful but my info is several years old. |

Hi Richard, I got one from there last year; he only had 2 left! Unfortunately I do not have a micrometer to measure it accurately. Not sure about the part number though because I just asked for a spigot bush for Toyota T50 to 1275. Curiously, the paperwork from frontline who converted my car many years ago for a previous owner, describes a 'large' midget spigot bush and gives the normal part number. I havent pulled the engine and gearbox yet to confirm which type is fitted. |

I contacted Charles Ware and they recognised the part number 5G35, but from the picture they sent, it (now) refers to the needle roller spigot bearing for the Ford T9 conversion. Yesterday I sent them the pictures I have of the 'correct' part for a T50 and am waiting for a reply. AJR, Could you give some approximate dimensions for the attached rough sketch please? Mine is solid phosphor bronze and is badly worn on dimension 'C', but I would make a new one from steel, with either a bronze insert or more likely a caged needle roller bearing. Richard |

Hi Richard, I will try and measure today. I may also have some info from others. Bear with me and I'll dig it out. |

Hi Richard, The MMC part is/was steel with a phosphor bronze insert. The spigot depth of 'c' is 13.4mm with a diameter of 12mm, which you know, is the T50 i/p shaft size. I suspect AJR will have the measurements that Ian Webb gave us 18 months ago. If you would like to borrow an unused MMC spigot for a pattern, let me know. regards Derek |

Hi Derek, Yes please - where do you live? Anywhere vaguely near Oxford? Richard |

Richard I can measure my T50 spigot bush as my engine is out at the moment. will do that tonight. If you end up having to get it manufactured I would be interested in buying one for a spare. maybe some other owners might be interested too. Ian |

Hi Richard, Looks like others have come to the rescue! I can confirm that my spigot bush looks exactly the same as the other pictures, and my rough measurements are the same as others. |

Hi Richard, PM sent |

Hi Ian, Thanks, that would be great. I will be splitting my engine/gearbox next week, but I know the solid phosphor bronze one in it is very worn, so would much prefer to know what the 'as new' dimensions are. Once I know the dimensions, I should be able to machine one up quite easily, and once 'proved', would be happy to make some more for other owners. Richard |

Richard, Here is my spigot bush drawing, I also have a clearer copy on a PDF file, I can email that to you if prefer. My bush is a little loose when fitted in the back of the crank IMO, so if I was making a new one I would probably increase the o/d of the 21mm part to 21.5 or 21.8 mm, because my crank recess measures up at 0.878"/ 22.3mm i/d. It could turned up at 21.8 o/d and then reduced after testing in the crank. Having said that though my current bush has been used for 10 yrs and still looks good to go again. Ian |

Ian, Thanks very much indeed. If you could send me a pdf that would be ideal, thanks. I have shown my email address as part of this reply. I am still tracking down a couple of potential sources, but with the definitive sizes I can now make one - excellent!! Richard |

Ian's spigot bush dimensions are, as Richard initially requested, for a 1275 engine and would replace the original bush, AHU1026A. The MMC replacement bush, 5G35, was for early 12CC engines, replacing part no. 1A1559, which also fits the 1098 crankshaft. Since I have an earlier engine, I missed the change point and simply had to match the bush I was replacing, which MMC had in stock at the time. Frontline must have had the spigot bush made for the later engines |
