MG Midget and Sprite Technical - toyota t50 rebuild kits

My brain is a little scattered this morning... can you fill in the details of why a USA toyota T50 is relevant to the spridget ? Is it the same thing as the australia toyota T2/3 transmission used in the dellow conversion My minds a blank on this today Thanks Prop |

Errmmm... I have no idea what you are saying Prop. Toyota 5 speeds were popular on spridgets and moggie minors here in the UK a few years ago, but spares are now difficult to obtain. Came from a Corolla or Celica from the mid 80's; alloy gearbox, very smooth. Mine still shifting like a dream but who knows for how long? |

Thats what I was trying to recollect... I dont think the USA toyota box and the same ones in austrila are the same box... I want to say in OZ there known as T2/3 Here the toyota box conversion is fairly rare...the most practical is the datsun That said... im sure Toyota T50 rebuild kits are common enough Prop |

Aj, Please know, im NOT trying to discredit you in anyway, in fact I want you to be dead on correct, resonable price rebuilds are hard to comeby, if that keeps a midget on the road ...awsome... im a 1/2 glass empty kind of guy. I just see 2 red flags that can be a huge head ache 1. The compatiablity issue we dicussed above...apperarently we did have the correla for 4 years with the maybe correct T50 and we had variants that where adapted...but nothing in large #s So the question of why stock alot of parts for something thats very rare and 4 decades old 2. Pro auto parts guys are going the way of milkmen, draftsman, shoe cobblers...that job is now intrusted to 17 year olds kids and blue haired great grand mothers working part time minume wage its a job not a carrer...of which 6 /10 the part is wrong the 1st time So can you trust your american source that he knows whats real, or is it just words on a computer screen...and saying yeah yeah yeah like a beaten parrot easier then doing the research Thats the primis of my debate... and agian I want you to be the victor not me |

this is the T50 on this side of the pond, with Dellow bellhousing I believe...

David, Yes, that is definitely a Toyota T50 gearbox, with the A-Series conversion bellhousing, which was originally developed by Rooster Racing in Australia. Dellow still do some spares for the T50, but not the bellhousing as far as I know. The box in the picture is the earlier version of the T50, with angled gear lever mounting and different primary shaft bearing and output shaft splines. In the USA it was fitted behind the 2T and 3T range of engines. Great box with very smooth gear change, especially when fitted with a 'quick change'. |

Aj, Im sorry body, I really am... and to be honest your research maybe spot on, I cant say one way or the other... to me it just seemed to carry some risk with a negitive outcome would not have been enjoyable Had it gone bad, trying to return the kit then refund monies, in differant currancys, the hell of explaing the transaction to the cradit card companys, and the tax man I just think this is one of those things you really want to have nailed down before you press that F5 button on the key board I did see an ebay listing for a toyota T50 rebuild kit on ebay, but the details were very vague...the price ... only $500. Usa, and im like thinking "how much is a good used T50 transmission cost" haha The things we wont do for our little (girls) I mean cars Anyway do the research, make sure you can trust the parts guy, and I hope the best for you, from what I understand from others here on the board, its a great little box Prop |

Andrew, The only supplier of T50 overhaul kits that I know of in the USA is Allstate Gear in San Antonio, Tx. Is this the same connection? The Allstate Gear link is: http://allstategear.com/allstate/productsearch.aspx?PageNo=1 Enter in Toyota Car and Corolla 1.6 to get a list of T50 options. There are 2 types - the one in the picture above with the 62mm primary shaft bearing and 20T output spline, and the later box with a 68mm bearing and 22T output shaft (this one also has the horizontal gear lever housing). The prices seem quite reasonable for a complete set of bearing plus synchro rings if required? I rebuilt ours about 10/12 years ago using bearings from a trade supplier and that did not include the centre layshaft bearing, which at the time was 'Toyota only' and ~£100! Richard |

Update - On US eBay at the moment is a complete bearing/synchro kit for the later box for $500 Buy-it-Now (~£300). Auction ref: 321484470847 Is this the same one that you saw Prop? Richard |

Hi Richard, No, my connection is not a retailer, just an enthusiast I believe. Thanks for the link, good prices, but as Prop says, in the USA they differentiate between different years of manufacture, calling the later box a T51. All depends on the diameter of the input bearing, 16mm or 18mm. Only way to tell is to pull the box I guess, which is why I'm leaving well alone until I have to! Don't want to spend money and then find I've ordered the wrong kit! |

Andrew, There are a number of ways to tell which version it is: The gear lever housing - angled for early, horizontal for late Output splines - 20T for early, 22T for late Primary shaft bearing OD - 62mm for early and 68mm for late The gear lever housing is visible with everything in situ. Thanks Richard. My gear lever housing is indeed horizontal, BUT the lever has a metal blade on the end instead of a ball and acts directly on the forks, metal to metal. I've been told it may have been modified at some point, although I have also been told its a 'late' box. Probably the only way to be absolutely sure is to remove it...... Regards, Andrew |
