MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Tracker

Has anyone seen/used one of these?

One of the reviews says it uses nearly 100mA which is equivalent to leaving your interior light on day & night.
Good price though.

Im sure if you asked "please" the NSA would give you one for free

That one is fairly elbrote ... we have had them for about 15 years ... most popular is called ( garmin)

The main problem aside fromnthe NSA,is you can do alot more with a smartphone and so much easier and its a free app and no extra permanent clutter taking up spacein the car

Prop

On a daily driver shouldn't be a problem. I also have a larger battery, now located in the boot, to make sure my daily drive is always up to the extra power use in the winter months. (only 1 guess where the spare is). If its not a daily drive then its a case of adding keeping the battery in top condition to the list of necessary things to keep going at when its not in use.

prop could you elaborate please, you lost me.???

To be honest,.im a little lost as well

Are we talking about a GPS, that does navigation and can track your car if its stolen ???

prop.
its just a small box you hide somewhere on the car and it has a phone sim card in it. when your car goes missing or you want to check your car is still where you left it you ring the number of your sim and it hangs up and texts you back with the whereabouts of your car.it gives you the longitude and latitude which you copy and paste into your google maps or similar and it shows you where the car is.the only downfall i can find at the minute is how long it lasts before making the battery flat.if useing on car which is a daily driver it will not be a problem but if say car parked in garage not at your address for a few weeks then dont think it will be any good.

Should surgically insert one into Prop - just in case he decides to cross the pond someday.....

Bob,

that's what my concern is; during spring/summer/autumn shoudn't be an issue but if laid up for anytime it could cause problems. Maybe the answer is to get a battery conditioner from Aldi and keep the battery topped up that way.

That one looks like a TK103 clone. If you're buying one try to avoid the clones, make sure you get a genuine Xexun TK103.

The TK103 draws 40ma when idle, about the same as a car alarm.

There's a GPS forum which is a good place to start

Mark's comment made me laugh :)

Well that sounds.really cool.... I need one incase I cross the pond... phiff, I could really use one inserted into me now for everyday living.....haha

With the data stored on a sim card... and the system is essential a low end smartphone.... my thought would be to wire the system into the ignition so it turns on and off with the coil, fuel pump or starter

That way when the car is started, it would activate the secuirty device only during operation and not be on 24/7/365

On my phone... I can turn it off, pull the battry, pull the sim card, leave it dead for weeks.on end and I can reassemble and it would work as right now.

Granted... this wouldnt help if thieves pushed onto.anflat bed or down the road

But thats how id hook it up

start car > secuity system start up> activates sim card > processes data as to its current gps location> security system emials you its were abouts

The TK103 has a backup battery. Normally it's inactive (on standby) until you send it an SMS to query its position, but it will always wake up and start reporting its position if battery power is disconnected or the SIM removed.

You can also set it to wake up if the car alarm is triggered, if it moves outside a certain area, or if it detects vibration.

Prop: for your usage scenario you'd be better to look at a TK101 motorcycle trackers. They have no backup battery and simply report their location when powered up. Again, beware of clones and check out the reviews carefully: some motorcycle size trackers don't have real GPS, they use phone towers for location.

Ebay listing 121213757296 (just put that number into Ebay's search box) is what I have on my van.

Hi Bob,
that looks a lot neater and with a considerably lower current draw and it's cheaper.
Let us know how you get on!

I've had this one installed for about 4 years. It's OK, but my car's never been nicked so I don't know how effective it would be. It works in the same way as described above with a sim card. You call it, then it hangs up and texts you to give its coordinates.
I have a Car-disconnect with bypass fuse device fitted, so you can disconnect the rest of the car and the tracker is still connected. Hasn't ever drained my battery even when not used for long periods in winter.

Cheers Bernie,

also have a car disconnect thingy but without the fuse and an alarm designed for a motorbike wheel which fits in one of the holes in the steering wheel spokes and screeches like a banshee if disturbed; especally loud in the confines of a midget cabin but was thinking about a more modern
