MG Midget and Sprite Technical - tracking/wheel alignment
hi, I hope to finish fitting my Frontline telescopic damper kit, Barry King strengthened wishbones and Frontline 340lb lowered springs to the front of my mk3 RWA midget and need to adjust the tracking/toe/wheel alignment. It has poly bushes all round and 11/16ths anti roll bar (or the next size up from standard, whatever that is). What toe in/out is optimal for a car set up like this? Thanks Dave |

The reason for any amount of toe in or out is to try and ensure that when the wheel is rolling it is exactly in line with the forward motion of the car. In that condition the tyre rolls true with no sideways forces causing the rubber to "crab" against the Tarmac. So rear wheel drive cars often have toe in, because the front wheels are being pushed forward and have a tendency to splay out due to the resistance of the tyre against the road. Front drive cars may toe out because the drive being applied to the front wheels may cause them to pull inwards. I have had good success with the gunson Trakrite. This is a rather expensive gadget that you drive over. If there is any sideways crabbing of the tyre, the gauge shows you. You can then adjust the toe until the gauge shows that the wheels are running true. You don't need to know the "correct" toe setting - you simply adjust until the gauge reads zero. No connection, just a satisfied customer. |
