MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Turbo HIF linkages

Here's one for the turbo boys.
I can't see how the throttle / choke cables terminate on my Turbo HIF, is there a bracket where the cable sheaths fit?
Brad 1380

Brad
There is a bracket that fits between carb and manifold, its good for the throttle cable but you will have to make something for the choke side.
I can get you a picture if you need to fabricate one of your own.
How come you didnt get one when you got your manifold and carb ??
Rob Newt

K am trying to think how that is but am struggling till I get home and have a look? If Rob can't give you a photo then I can get one for you Brad.

Hey Rob didn't know you had done a write up on your turbo any chance of a copy? Would love to put it on the website so that people don't get bored with my efforts :) rjwelchmidget at aol.com

Rob,
i didn't buy the carb & inlet together. A picture of the choke bracket would be great.

thanks
Brad

Does the attached photo help? The choke cable is supposed to be held in place by the clip circled in red.

I found that at full throttle the throttle quadrant fouled the choke cable and would wear through it in quick time.

The simplest solution was to drill and tap a spare lug just below the dash pot which just happened to be in just the right spot and keeps the choke cable well away from the throttle quadrant.

David Banks

Much the same as the above photo

Ours are mounted to the heat shield instead - i will try and dig out a photo for you

P.S - David, I like your spare throttle cable, just can't help but think it "may" get in the way or cause problems, but im guessing you're one of these people that has had that "mod" for years without fault.
PeterJMoore

Hi Brad,
I made a combined throttle and choke bracket out of bent eighth alu plate.Threw away the Quadrant and hooked the throttle cable to the other end of the spindle.

steve cowling

The carb dashpot is not from a Turbo HIF.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Here is the bracket in question, you can see the choke connection on the left that uses the spring clip for the cable and the throttle on the right
I think this may differ from the standard bracket by the fitting on the bottom that fixes the heat shield

Thanks Bob,
mini spares sell the bracket, so i'll add that & a clip to the list.
Any idea what the bottom squarish holes are for?

Steve,
i like your ali rocker cover painted, did you use engine enamel?
Brad 1380

It's for the bottom heatshield mate, I have never had mine fitted without any problems either. :)
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Sorry Brad been in the garage all night as I have a rolling rd session tommorow, looks like everyone has answered your questions and posted pics in my absence.

Bob
No problem for the write up,email rob@cornishconnectionpasty.co.uk for what you need ?
Rob Newt

Rob,
your right, problem solved, so many thanks to everyone for answering.

Watch out for my next thread 'i can't get the intercooler to fit'!
Brad 1380

Looking forward to that one Brad,As I was thinking of asking Jimmy Saville to fit mine (Renualt 5 turbo)!!!
Rob Newt

I gave up on the R5 one & now have an Escort one to try.
Brad 1380

Hi Brad,
The rocker cover came like that from minispares,it's the only one I could fit over 1.5 roller tip rockers (with a bit of help from the dremel)
Daniel,I guess you refer to the image before mine,I had the dashpot clamp fitted, which obscures the groove in it.
steve cowling

Steve, I guessed the fatter section on your dashpot was the clamp. Brad's carb dashpot neither has the groove for the clamp or the fatter section that would be a clamp.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Where is the photo of Brad's carb Daniel? Are you refering to the photo posted by David which is a normally aspirated carb and set up?
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Yes I was, duhhh. At least I can tell a turbo from a non turbo HIF even if I can't spot the difference from Brad's post to David's!

I plead over tired and over keen?
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Nice one mate!!
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Hi Steve,
i've a set of Titans for the new engine & a similar rocker cover to you, where did you have to use the dremel?
Brad 1380

Front corner, pushrod side.Took the sharp corner off the rocker and a bit out of the cover wall.
steve cowling

Thanks Steve,
i'll check mine later today.

Thanks Rob :-)
Brad 1380

Next question is what to do with the inlet manifold hard pipes, do i just hack them off?
The engine is half way through a dry build to check clearances & general fitment of non standard parts.
