MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Turn indicators acting odd....

The turn indicators on my midget were acting up, as were some other electrics. Turns out several ground points and wires where rusted solid. Cleaned them up or replaced them solved the issues...almost:
After turning on the ignition, the turn indicators don't work the first time I switch them on! Only the second time and after that initial time they blink without problems.
Switched the ignition off and on and got the same result. Tried several times to rule out dirty contacts in the switch, but I get the same result every time.
The workaround is easy, just signal left and right one time after startup and after that they work, but still it puzzles me...

Any bright ideas to what might cause this odd behaviour?

Cheers,

Eddy

Good question, Eddy!

Maybe it's the flasher unit. Sounds as if the contacts may be a bit dirty, and it takes two or three tries before they notice the current hitting them.

What Gryf says Eddy

A new one seems called for

And I have a theory that modern pattern ones don't last long before the points fail again

My car uses a two terminal flasher from a Honda that was a legacy from a bloke that bought it because he thought a fault with his was down to the flasher unit

Not the bunrt out bulb in one of his flasher repeaters....
