MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Twin SU on a 1500 pics?

Hey Everyone,
Thanks to the generosity of Clive Redding, I have a dual-carb set-up to replace the (insert appropriate expletive) single Zenith on my '75 1500. Problem is I have no point of reference to see what I'm missing to get it all set properly.

The accelerator linkage looks to move in the opposite direction of how the cable wants to pull it. I know I'm missing a piece (Clive mentioned Bob Tooke might be able to help there), but I find visual references work best for me to see it all.

So... anyone got this set-up on their 1500 that they can take a picture of for me (or post if you already have pics.)

Thanks in advance!

I cant take new pictures because of other engine then the good old 1500 but maybe these are of some use to you.

Chris, drop me an email and I should be able to help put together the missing bits for you.

Don't forget to remove the NOSPAM.

Dont forget to slam a dent in the top corner of the passenger footwell to make sure the float chamber is clear and cant touch that part of the body not even when the engine is shaking a bit.
If not clear the chamber could break and then your in deep sh*t.

Can you see it on the image(just above the black grommet/brakepipes before the triangle body reinforcement starts).

Chris, check out the MOSS UK site. It has a very good diagram of the whole set up.

The biggest piece that was missing was the bracket that the throttle cable attached to. That should be easy to locate from our friends in the UK.

Sorry it wasn't complete but that was the way it arrived here.

Arie, the carb set up came off a 1500 midget and is going back on a 1500 Midget. Does Chris still have to make additional clearances for the float chamber? I would have thought that it would fit with no problems being the same model/engine.

Only the carbody needs modifications.
The US 1500 models are slightly different to the english 1500.
The triangle bit of inforcement you see on my second image is one of these "special" lefthand drive additions.
You can see where i made a deep dent in the footwell top panel, thats not there on Righthand drive cars as thats where theire steering collum comes out.

The carb setup itself needs no adjustment/changing, that will naturly fit without any problems.

The UK/US chassis rail arrangement is slightly different Clive. On UK models there is a cutout in the rail to clear the SU float bowls.

Also on LHD models, there is a triangular re-enforcement where the rail meets the footwell which would need to be removed to clear the carbs.

How do I know? I've modified a California shell to convert to RHD ;o)

Well, I hope Chris is paying attention!

I AM reading with interest considering she dropped into place with no fit problems whatso ever. I'll go back and check it all this week-end and check clearances taking into account engine shake and all that. I'll post a pic over the week-end of what I have and maybe that'll help illustrate my situation.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Hey Chris, on reflection I think the issues are with the airbox clearance rather than the carbs themselves. If you fit K&N cone type filters, it may not be an issue.
Bob T

Chris,

Check the space between the rear fuel bowl and footwell. While my dual setup "slipped in" there is hardly any clearance and I think if you don't address that area by denting or cutting back the section you would experience the bowl hitting the car body as the engine vibrated.

I've got some details of it about half way down on this website: http://www.visn2.com/Flash%20Website/Carbs_for_1500.html

You should really enjoy the dual setup. Looks nice and I noticed a nice improvement when I switched.

Sorry the above link doesn't seem to work. Not sure why?
Thor Patterson-Ritz

It worked for me and seen your restauration except for the details you mention.
