MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Twin webers on a 1500, just 1 thing missing!!

Hi all,

Hope someone out there can help me out, I am just ready to put my brand new highly tuned engine into my lovely bundle of pleasure, and have subsequently been rebuilding my twin 40 webers, the problem I have is one of the auxiliary venturi has lost it's little spring clip which stops it rotating in the barrel. I have spoken to webcon who tell me that as this is the earlier style of carb they no longer manufacture this part as a spare.

Does anyone out there happen to have a 4.5 mm auxiliary venturi for a weber 40 with a spring clip attached that is surplus to requrements? How detrimental will it be to not have this clip in place during initial start up of a new engine? If no one has a spare aux venturi, anyone got any ideas? would a blob of solder or similar be an idiotic solution to this?

As always any and all comments and advice appreciated, thanks in advance

Dave

put a picture on of the part you need ( from other carb/ choke) i might have it iv got quite a few webber dcoe parts knocking about, failing that have butchers on e bay theres a guy who runs a shop on it and im sure he carries alot of the older parts hope that is of some help

Dave,

I expect someone will have the part but if not post a picture so we can make informed comments. If the spring clip is round section it maybe possible to make one easily from piano wire available from many model shops.

Dave, engine looks smart! I always love to see a new engine like that. Just built one myself, I'll get some pictures on this weekend.
Tarquin

I wish mine still looked like this

Love to see the pics Tarquin, sorry I don't have the carbs here with me now but I will get pics up sometime over the weekend.

If anyone wants to see it in an exploded diagram, then google "40 dcoe exploded diagram" and look at part labelled 17 :)

Dave,

I had a look but none the wiser regarding the spring clip. I am familiar with the Weber set-up but more so the Dellorto DHLA as I collected 6 Dellorto 40 sidedraughts courtesy of rusty Alfa Romeos in breakers yard. Still got 4 kicking around IIRC. Used a couple on my 1098, 1215, and 1420, one at a time. The first one had been used on a Harley Davidson but was removed as apparently it scared the driver witless compared to the standard HD set-up.

Carl,

Maybe the 1500 blocks were originally painted the color of dirty engine oil for a reason. :) Or were they some other color in the Home Market? At the risk of co-opting the thread, Is that a rocker oil feed line coming out of the oil pressure sender fitting in the pic of your engine?

Hi Rich,

Both Carl and I seem to have fitted the rocker oil feed line, I have done it on 3 of the 1500 midgets I have had and never had any oil problems at all (he says touching every bit of wood in arms reach !!)

A definite recommendation to any 1500 owner, unbelieveable really it was never there on the original design!

I am not sure which part you are refering too? I don't know on any springs?

Isn't the venturi held in by the screw located in the bottom of the barrel?

These little screws I have seen come loose on a regular basis and allow the venturi to spin that then allows the jet pipe to not connect with the fuel supply and the wengine will struggle when power is required as it will only run on pilots

Managed to find a pic on the web showing the spring clip, note it on the top of the side on image which is the last one, hope this clears it up a bit,

You have got me thinking now!! and I only had my weber apart 6 months ago :-))

As you say this is the old design ?

Nowadays the part shown in your drawing is actually 2 parts (if my memory is not too far diminished)

The flow straightener with the jet installed is held in place by a screw in the bottom of the barrel and the venturi (Size of the throat) is held into the barrel by the flow straightener.

I have not seen one of your types for a good number of years and I had forgotten about its existance. I am pretty sureyou will not find the part you are looking for, but I am often wrong :-))
Good luck

Just a quick thank you for all your comments,
against the odds I managed to pick up a spare for this older type Weber from a contact at Andersons race engineers in Timsbury :)) Safe in the knowledge that I now have an uninterupted fuel suply to the carbs, I have gone ahead and stuck everything together!!

Last question...any recommendations for a rolling road in the south west? or any horror stories of ones to avoid? At present Mech in Gloucester is the only recomendation I have for carb'd engines, any better?

Thanks again

Dave
