MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Two Speed wiper motor

Hi,

I am planning to make my wiring loom to suit a two speed wiper motor.

Does the 1500cc model have a two speed wiper motor or do I need to source one from another vehicle?

My vehicle is a 1974 RWA with a single speed wiper motor

Happy new year

Cheers

The 1500 has a 2 speed wiper motor but even at "fast" it really isn't compared to some other cars. Yes, the wiper rack is clean and not bunged up with hardened grease.

In the UK, I think it was only later 1500s that had 2 speeds. I can't be bothered to get the parts book out at this time of night.

Many more MGBs had 2-speed wipers. If you get a motor from anything other than a midget, youo will need to change the drive gear.

IIRC I fitted a Marina wiper motor to my A35.

I didn't know that Dave. I was referring to the NA spec cars since that's what I have and I naturally thought the UK cars would be similar.

My '73 has a two speed wiper motor. Why is it your '74 does not have one?

Thanks for the replies guys,

Dave,

So the MGB motor is interchangeable? They might be easier to source than a late 1500 Midget one?

Jon,

I don't think the UK CB Midgets had 2 speed wipers, maybe the US spec was different?

OK, I've had a look in the parts book and can't find any reference to change to two-speed wipers.

According to Horler, home market cars did not get the two-speed wipers until GAN6 212001 in May '78.

My NA '78 has a 2 speed: creep & slow.

I use Rain X on the windshield & door glasses, it helps alot. It also polishes the glass & makes it look almost new...very good product!

You won't necessarily have to change the wiper gear if you get a two speed motor from anything other than a Midget. What you have to check is that you have a wiper gear that has the same or 5 - 10 degrees more sweep (UK 2 wiper blade cars) rather than a motor that has less.

If you buy a new motor (service exchange and even then not cheap) they are all two speed (not an issue that you are exchanging a single speed). New motors come without the cog.

This is stuff about this in a book....

I did mine with an Ital motor (swapped in the gear from mine) and a later 2 speed switch. It only needs 1 extra wire from the switch to the motor.
