MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Type 9 gearbox. Oil drain. No drain plug needed.

Why hasn't this been mentioned here before? Or has it, and have I missed it?

My Capri axle, doesn't have a drain plug. To get the oil out, I had to pull the diff bolts and let the oil spill out to a large bowl underneath. -- I was pulling the diff anyway. I was going to drill and tap the axle case so that next time, I can drain the oil with ease.

Someone just said to me, "You could always use a vacum drainer ---- "

Huh?

So I googled it.

Has anyone used them? Do they work?

Loks like instead of drilling my axle case, I'll get one of these.

We use a similar but larger device in the LifeBoat. I think it's 10 litres.

It is very effective indeed, but I'd venture your drill-and-tap proposal would be even better if you're not fixated on complete originality. Especially if you used a magnetic plug.

I'm curious about the thread heading though. Are you planning to fit a type 9 or was it a type-0!

I hadn't expected that the Capri axle wouldn't have a drain plug, and then someone on a Ford thread mentioned vacuum suction.

That made me think, did I really need to drill and tap a plug into my Type9 box, the one I already have in my Sprite?

I have 3 spare Tpye9 g/boxes, and when testing them by swapping each one in turn, into my Sprite (all good btw), I took the opportunity to drill and tap drain plugs.

But had I known about these oil vacuums, -- cheap -- I'm not so sure I'd have bothered.

As for my Capri. It has the original 3 rail 4 speed all synchro, bolt on remote g/box. I might indeed swap that for a Type 9.

When we wanted to drain my neighbours type 9 in his Morgan in situ we used a spare water washer pump, worked fine but run it intermittently so it doesn't get too hot as not intended for oil thickness or continiuous running.

Lots of the engine oil changes done by the cheaper cut price places use an oil extraction pump rather than remove the drain plug. Its quicker and cleaner for them. But its considered cheapskate. Unless the operator is very diligent it's more than likely to leave old contaminated oil behind if the suction tube doesn't get to the very lowest recess. And it would probably not be very good at shifting any semi solidified residues.

Good point Guy.

Once your done with sucking the fluid out of your rearend you could ......

Use an old empty chaulking tube (cleaned out of coarse) and connect the suction hose to the chaulking tube and stick the tube over your man hood for a relaxing sunday afternoon

Think of it as a 2 for 1 suck out....haha

Oh come on.... I wasnt the only one to think that. :-)

Marmite...love it / hate it

Ive heard of it before but I had to look it up for a food spread thats roughly a centry old, it has some great history...

$800 a jar in new zealand christchurch earth quack a few years back...now that should be a movie, I thought paying $5 for peanut butter was bad...haha

Funny... we have a unilever factory in my home town, but they just but the paste into the tube, and make soap, I dont think we have any food products like marmite.
