MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Type 9 Spigot bearing won't fit?
Hi All, me again with another question. I bought a David Manners spigot bush for use with a Type 9 GB and 1275 engine. It doesn't fit in the end of the crank!!! I reckon the bush is about 0.7mm too big in diameter. I remember someone else had this problem but I can't find it in the archives because I think it was in a thread that drifted somewhat. Anyone had this problem and if yes how was it overcome? Rob |

It doesn't fit in the crankshaft at all Rob It sits at the back of the flywheel to hold it all shipshape. It's a snug-ish fit in the hole there, I've asisted mine with a slosh of "Loctite Stud and Bearing Fit" cyano. I don't think I have a picture but I will have a look in the hard drive for one. |

Ah found one Seems it's in the front of said flywheel This is my old one that got battered a bit when the clutch set up got upset. |

Confirm what Bill says. Mine fits in the front of the flywheel.(1098). Bernie. |

Sorry, should have clarified the problem. Fitting it from the front of the flywheel, the smaller diameter is supposed to sit in the larger hole in the crank end. But on mine, the hole in the end of the crank is 0.6mm smaller diameter than the smaller diameter of the spigot bearing carrier. So, it sits about 8mm proud of being flush with the flywheel face. Rob my spigot bearing doesn't fit in the crank at all. The idea of using the MMC version is that the crank and spigot don't need to touch. Can you show us a picture of what you have, because I can't visualise your problem from this? The bearing sits at the front of the flywheel and does NOT get as far back as the crank, mine has been like this for over ten years. And the only trouble I've had wasn't the spigot bearing it was a misfitted concentric slave cylinder which wasn't screwed down hard enough. Although I bought a new MMC spigot bearing I actually re-used the old one. It is fine. |

Hey rob, Ive been there, fixed it, and upset the BBS and made it cry at the time River gate 5 speed conversion for datsun made mention of this on there web site, as there are 2 differant size of inside dia crank shaft sizes...but I dont recall why I to ended up with the wrong size spridot bushing outside diameter to big Instead of shiping back and waiting a week for redelivery .... What I did was this... I took a long fat bolt and inserted it thur the bushing so no play then nutted it down, then I put the assembly in a hand elect drill and secured that into a bench vice Next I got a flat file, and some various grits of sand paper and a micrometer I turned on the drill and used the flat file to remove the metal almost down to size then used the various sand papers to finish it off to a nice smooth finish in the correct outside deminsion... I constantly mic'ed as iI went Now... this is actually a bad thing I did, my bushing is a oily brass bushing, it supposedly self lubericates... so I jambed it into the crank shaft and put a blob of white litium grease into the end of the crank shaft and finished my engine reinstall This made the BBS.very upset and they cried alot back in the day when I did this. Apperantly doing what I did clogs the brass and wont let the brass lubricate My thinking is this... I did the reshaping on the outside the area thats fixed to the crank shaft... that dosnt spin I then added white litium grease inside the chrankshaft hole as it dose have some contact with the trany input shaft.... That was way back then, this is now and no issues, I figure if I do have an issue I can always reorder the correct size bushing and pull the engine agian and replace the modified bushing... so far ive gambled correctly You place your bets, you spin the wheel, you win you lose, I doulbt jesus will burn a cross for you trying Prop My thinking is |

Really spooky Prop. I've just spent an hour or so in the garage doing exactly what you said. Almost word for word. Apart from the Lithium grease, you will go to hell for that!!!! For those that can't visualize the problem see the image that Lawrence attached. The part marked with a dimension of 22.22mm goes inside the crank. The bit marked 7.32mm lies within the thickness of the flywheel. The flywheel buts onto the end of the crankshaft so there are 10.90mm actually within the end of the crankshaft. On my crankshaft, the 22.22mm hole is actually 21.65mm, hence one won't fit within t'other. But now, using Prop's method, I have it all assembled and it is now flush with the flywheel face. I would have taken a picture of the spigot bearing carrier but it is now firmly attached to the engine and I can't remove it now. Rob |

Whereas on all the ones I have fitted I have had them a snug fit into the rear of the crank. I have even had one made to measure because of a massive variation in the end of one crank. Bill's method is as recommended but when it comes to skinning cats......................... Alan |
