MG Midget and Sprite Technical - tyre choice
I am in danger of getting the orange box sprite back on the road. I has oversized tyres fitted since it built in 1986 . from memory they are 220 60 13 , some sort of Goodyear .if i putter better tyres on will I end up with broken diff or drive shafts. with smaller wheels on the body would look silly. any tyre suggestions? regards Pete ( see head for the hills for pictures) |

Pete, I'm a bit lost with what you want but old tyres, especially one that haven't been used much for a good time are best replaced I'll put my usual links to tyres/wheels that gives loads of info and add there loads on tyre subjects in the Archive I'm not sure what engine you have for those tyres but grip is mostly about the model, type and compounds of the tyres rather than size, a good little 'un is better than a poor big 'un http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html |

No you won't break halfshafts or your diff with other tyres. Go for a 165/70 or a 155/80 that way the car will look good and handle well. I like Vredestein but then I am Dutch. There are a lot of threads about tyre choise so try to search for those and find out everyone has his preferences |

220-60-13 .... 220? thats huge! Do you have special wheelarches on the car? A photo please? Had 155 for years but find them a bit skinny now. I now run 175-65-14 in a squar arched midget but had to gently push out the arches to keep the tyres clear. 165 like Onno suggested would be the best for a square wheel arched spridget to my opinion. But with 220 on now you probably have a round wheel arch so youre more or less free to do what you want, 185 perhaps? |

good evening gents, the car was built round these revolution wheels. It is round wheel arch at the back with a custom flare to hide the wheels front has about a four inch extension to the wheel arch and the body is built to cover the wheels .The wheels dont protrude out from the body and there are no flares on the body. I think it would look strange with smaller wheels, and my query was with stickier tyres and such wide wheels whether something would break without further mods to the back end. At sea at moment but will post some pictures when I get home . But they are on head for the hills regards Pete |

Ahh so the question was not realy clear. Well the only way to find out is drive it! Original diff and halfshafts have been known to take silly things without a problem. But they are also know for snapping just as you drive jour std car away from a junction. |
