MG Midget and Sprite Technical - USA spec wiring harness

Am I right in thinking that the US spec harness for a left hand drive 1971 car would still go along the right hand side of the car / engine bay with just the dashboard loom reversed? I bought a brand new harness in January which I've just got around to checking out and all the dash wiring seems to be at the wrong end i.e. the speedo / tacho wiring and the indicator stalk plug are at the left hand end.

Also, while the boot loom I have is correct, the main loom doesn't have a purple connector for the boot lamp. is that usual in US spec cars?

Hi Graeme,

You are correct, the LHD harness does still route up the RH side of the engine room, and through the firewall at the same grommet location near the RH bonnet hinge.

It is strange that the boot lamp wire is missing from your main harness because it was added in 6/'70. However, if you were sent the wrong main harness (LHD when you needed RHD), maybe it is also the wrong year!

Thanks for the swift reply Norm. It was sold as 70/71 so I guess it'll be early '70. It has the horn on the indicator stalk and no other interior lamps so I guess it's the US equivalent of MOSS' AHA9612.
I bought it on ebay new but no packaging so I have no comeback with the seller. At least now I know exactly what it is I can advertise it correctly.

cheers

I've also just found out (after receiving the correct loom from moss and also checking in the bag of dirty, oily, stcky wiring in the loft) that there is no real difference between left and right hand drive looms - the one I just received still has the connections for the speedo, tach and steering wheel at the 'wrong' end. I guess the loom must bend round on the firewall. I just wish I could find the photos I took when I stripped the thing :-(
