MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Using Old Volvo air filter housings

Hello, I am in the need of new air filters and have decided not to go with the K&N. I noticed that older Volvo's with HS2's had simple paper element round air filter housings.Has anyone tried these? Bob C

Bob -

As far as I know, Volvo never had HS2s, at least not in the USA. B16s had H4s, B18s and B20s had HS6s.

However, Triumph Spitfires used HS2s with individual air filters. Look for Mk1, Mk2, or early Mk3 - later Mk3s had a single HS4.

Why won't you go for k&n?

John Twist said that the stock filter housings, with K&N inserts work/flow very well.

I was able to get cheap (OEM) housings at an auto jumble, because so many folks throw them away to fit after market ones that probably flow no better.

adding a stub stack (like in the link below, from APT), improves the airflow regardless of filter / housing used, because of the large radius in place of the sharp corner on the carburetor "edge", should result in more laminar air flow. Just make sure that it fits inside whatever housing you use (the stock housing is so large there is lots of room for a tall one, if desired).

My comment on the K&N is that I want a filter that filters the best, not necessaraly flows the best.Pleated paper just seems to be easier. Bob

in that case, why not use the stock MG housings and stock filters?
they are quite large, and have a lot of filter surface area (and are paper).

I guess that there is something about the Volvo ones that you have seen and would like to adopt. I suppose that you could get some from a salvage yard and then adjust the attaching surface as needed to fit your smaller carbs. Because HS4s are larger than HS2s, I suspect that it will be easy to make them work (easier to make a "too big" hole fit, than one not big enough!).

Uh oh!!!

Sounds like a new sheriff is comming to town

WAh woo wha....THISSSSHHhhh (western gun fighter music)

Hahaha

The K&N is a good filter... Last 1,000,000 miles yepp that right 1,000,000 miles before replacement, (seriously they are advertised as such) It claims to remove alot of vary fine micro particals and the filter paper/cloth uses a special oil that has to be applied once a year... dust on a dry paper filter, vs dust on a oil soaked cloth filter...

Im not sure which one will keep the most dirt and dust out :) :) :)

If you want a paper filter... Id go to autozone/advance/orielly... they have HUGE books that can cross referance any filter ... as far as paper filters ... there all the same, made in china I wouldnt get involoved in brand names... Stp is same as a boush is the same as fram, is same as perqulator... even if there is a differance.. its hardly measureable.

Mh, not everybody believes the K&N myth.
Check this page, scroll down a bit for K&N.

Hey Alex
On a brake from building?
Onno Könemann

Bob,

If you want simple paper air filter elements that will work on HS2 carbs without a housing, get part number 3-177 from Victoria British. They fit Spitfire Mk1 and Mk3. $7.95 each. Not available from Moss. They work well for me, either in or out of the factory housing.

(picture is of a 1500 with HS2s instead of the more common HS4 or ZS150. Will work on A-series.)

LOL Alex,

Im sceptical about the million mile claim as well, but that dosnt mean I wont try to get at leat 800,000 miles out of My K&Ns...LOL

Onno, unfortunately my leave days are a bit limited, so I'm back to work again. Fortunately I don't have to work that much, so the building continues.

Feel free to drop by when you're in the hood (do contact me first to see if I'm there)

Lee,are you saying that the air filter- VB part # 3-177 is just two basically flat plates with a choice of paper elements between them? For the price you quoted do I get the whole deal or just the metal parts? Bob C
chamberlain Bob

The million miles does not mean without cleaning them. You do need to regularly clean and re-oil the elements.

I don't know what tests Twist used, but I find the stock filters to be just fine, but the snorkels rather restrictive. Also, if you try to just put in stub stacks, you will find it is less then trivial to get them to seat properly against the backplate as there are reinforcing washers spot-welded in place that will render the stubs counter-productive if you don't take care of them.

I use the stock backplates (minus the washers) with APT stub stacks, K&N elements and a single aluminium plate across the other end of the elements. All-thread in place of the bolts and locknuts instead of spacers. Added benefit is that it is much easier to adjust mixture without taking it all apart.
