MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Valve adjust MKIII 1275

The book say 0.3mm. When i turn loose the locking nut, adjust with screw until 0.3mm with litle drag. When i turn locking nut to fasten, keeping screw in position with screw driver, i dont have any drag between rocker and valve. Because locking nut is fastening screw in up position there is some distance lost, although it is verry little. But the difference is drag and no drag. What should be the situation after fastening lock nut? 0.3 mm with or without drag?

No drag is better than too much, and it is not that critical. If you cannot judge, then use the next size up gauge. In inches, setting is .012. If the clearance is an actual .012", then there will be NO drag on a .012 gauge. Use a .011 for definite NO drag, and a .013 for definite drag. There are "GO-NO GO" gauges made for just this purpose; they have step in them, and the smaller dimension is ground rough to give obvious drag if it is tight.

The locking and adjusting is one smooth move in which you lock the nut and slightly turn in the screw.
In this way you keep the same tension on the feeler gauge.
It takes a bit of practice and you think you need more hands to also hold the feeler gauge but ot can be done

I think you are worrying far too much. The "valve" tappet adjustment is just not that critical.

Do not get too concerned about it and simply set it up until you feel it is OK. As Onno points out initially before you tighten the lock nut simply bias the adjustment one way or the other so that tightening the lock nut puts it into the right place. Plus or minus 1 thou will not affect things at all.

Relax and do not get hung up on exact figures.

Bit like ignition timing 2 degrees either way makes no difference to a road car as does the same figures applied to cam timing. IMO

Do not get the gunson click adjust!
The difference between 2 clicks is more than the slack of tightening the nut.
Onno K

I agree, the Gunson Click Adjust seemed like a neat-o idea, but I found that it was simply easier to do it manually. It now collects dust.

I am not realy woried about the exact distance, but i find the valves a little noisy when adjusted loose and more quit when adjusted with some drag.
Niek Lammerts

I use the go/no go method as explained by FRM, you can't go wrong.
Pete Ottewell

Don't worry!
