MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Voltmeter Is In. Interesing observations.

Well I have the replacement voltmeter in and everything is ok now.

I initially fed it from the positive lead connection at the ignition coil as suggested. Turned the ignition on, 8 volts. Started car and 10.5 volts at the coil. Must be ballast resistor voltage. Moved it to the battery positive and 14.5 volts.

Moved it to a cold/hot terminal on the fuse block and all is well now.

Tested the Smiths across a battery with jumper leads and nothing. Kind of hoping it would work. Looks like new and hate to bin it. Anyone like it as a filler?

I'd be tempted to take it apart and see what went wrong. It's quite a simple device, so can't be much.

It used to show full voltage but began to read less and less accurate and eventually it died. It took a few seconds to climb to the correct voltage as well so maybe it was defective from the beginning?

If no one wants it to add to a gauge package for show not go, maybe I will take it apart and see if anything is amiss.

Clare,

You got nothing to lose to take it apart...its nothing more then an old house thermo stat without the murcury tube

As dave said... there really simple... most like its just dirt/corrosion on the electrical contacts the orginal looks alot nice then an odd ball new gauge
