MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Weber manifold

Had a lot of misfire problems with this car.
Always suspected among other things a repair made to the Weber manifold where the pipe to the brake servo attaches.
Anway, the car came back from the garage with yet more gum round this repair, so they must have suspected it too.
Just been rooting around under the bonnet & have noticed that the whole thing has come away.
Any ideas where I can get a new manifold from and how much they are?
Having trouble justifying any more expense to the gf!

thanks

Why not just get it welded and re-machined to take the servo connector or just welded shut if you don't have a servo.
David Billington

can't see from the pic exactly what type/size you have - is it like this?

I have a servo David, and getting in re machined here would be impossible.
I live in Mallorca!!!

The one you sent from ebay looks very different, but I'm sure would work.
Mine is an Oselli. I wonder what the differences are.

Might be difficult to weld because of the contamination in the aluminum, though not impossible. Maybe epoxy resin containing metal, like devcon, is an option
I did use that on an aluminum moped engine and it works very well.
Alex G Matla

I'd also suggest Araldite resin with metal. I used it once to repair an oil-leak on the take-off adapter for the KSeries, and it worked so well I wondered why I bought a replacement adapter.

Ben,

Anybody weld aluminium on Mallorca, maybe just get a piece of tube welded on.
David Billington

Forget about machining it. Get a -6 or -8 weld bung welded on and then use a Goodridge push fit fitting on it: 536-0106 or 536-0108. Threaded fitting screws onto the weld bung and barbed end pushes up the pipe. I can't attach a photo as it's too big for the BBS.

I have a place locally that would weld a weld bung on it for about £5. The only snag they are no longer in town and on the way to work so it's a day off in the week to get to their new place in Coventry. They do while I wait but would rather I come back another day..

If you want a replacement Oselli inlet, I gave mine away to someone in the USA who might even still have it - I can give you their details.

Found I had both in the garage so make me an offer! I'll put the fitting on ebay if you don't as I won't use it. The weld bung won't go on ebay as I might use and so it's a serviceable spare. Took a fresh photo a moment ago that's still too large.

Well that has certainly been your problem for a long time I suspect.

Araldite is probably what has been used previously and would not I suspect be a long term solution.

I can easily get aluminium welding done and would probably do that to repair such a problem. however a close second and he repair I would make if I were miles from home nd on holiday would be this material

We use this in industry for quick repairs or indeed difficult repairs. I have used it a number of imes and it is almost welding that can be applid like filler. You could simply "glue" your boss back on without issues.

This is a 2 pack product that I get in smaller sachets
If you are completely stuck I could sell you a couple for what they cost me and post them to Mallorca. very easy use.

BTW why on earth do you have a servo on a midget? Life would be a lot simpler if you did away with it and just kept the standard brakes up to scratch.
David Smith

Cos he wants one and he can. :)

David, its a 1430cc stage II 100bhp 5 speed beast.
When I get it running right again my next mod will be vented discs all round!

Ok everyone. Ive used a metal repair paste which seems to have done the trick. Ive also used sealant where the pipe attaches to the servo as that didnt seem a good fit (it popped out with a gentle tug)
Shes running a lot better but still stuttering on low revs. I made a quick video to listen to

Youtube link should be here

Ben

All I can do is tell you what size jets you need to power your engine but just let me ask again

You need to tell me what size chokes you have and what size jets you have presently.

Without knowing the choke size nobody can tell you what jets the car should have
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

If the pipe to the servo pops off the engine will go very lean very quickly which can result in terminal failure of the piston which is why I did this.

Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Bit over engineered Daniel isn't it? What do you do when the diaphragm splits?

I personally would back off when I felt the misfire and heard the pinking?
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Bob, Daniel does it that way 'cos he can :-)
David Smith

And he has a servo. :)

Mind if he didn't have one how could he fill his book?
