MG Midget and Sprite Technical - welding?

The drivers side floor pan on my 77 1500 has some corrosion and needs repairing. My qquestion is. . . For a man with no experience of welding, no welding equipment, would this be a good place to learn a new skill?
The alternative is getting someone to do it for me. What would be a ballpark figurefor such work.

Hi DJ,
You may have already done this, but the first stage is a VERY thorough check to see if there is any other rusting that needs doing. If the driver's side floorpan is corroded to the point that it need patching, then it is fairly likely that there is other corrosion to deal with as well. Once you have identified how much needs doing in total, you can then judge whether it is an area of ownership that you want to venture into. That said, a floor pan patch would be a fairly straightforward job to start off with.

I now like welding. But I like driving the car more.
On the other hand I couldn't afford for all the work on mine to have been done by someone else. For me it was the drivers floor, the drivers sills, the front of the drivers footwell, the rear drivers side wheel arch, and this / next year the passenger footwell front and floor, means as I discovered more problems I just worked on at minimal extra cost.
Now I can do it; the wondering how much is a lot less of a worry.

if its ONLY the floor pan... and you dont have a decent welder and grinders, and tools... then id sub it out

if you have everything already including fire extinguisher... then id do it my self

2 things to remember... rusty metal does not weld... so it has to be shinny from grinding

and good tools do quality work... cheap tools turn good projects into yard art trash very quick
