MG Midget and Sprite Technical - What Alloy Wheels are available
Getting towards the part of my Frogeye build up where I need to think about Wheels . The choice of 5 x 13 wheels is somewhat limited , Minilites or Minilite replicas. What else is out there that looks period. Has any firm ever made a set of replica Healey Alloys as used on early 1960's racing sprites? Any thing different available in USA ? Thanks Roy |

Hi Not quite period, but only a few years later (mid 1960s) - Revolution Wheels. Strong and lightweight. 4 or 5 spoke. Four spoke revolutions get my vote unless you can drop on a set of Cosmics or want to convert to tubeless wire spokes. |

Yep I am fan of revolutions too. I have a set of 5.1/2 lightweight ones which I use for trackdays. Look really good on a frogeye. |

This is what I have on my Frogeye: http://vtowheels.com/retro-4.html |

This is what I have. Ancient Compomotive 5.5J. They fit OK except for track days when they touch the wheelarches during hard cornering. I use 5J Minilites for track days.

I have original Rubery Owen later Spridget wider 5.5J disk wheels, which have the advantage of taking the same hubcaps and fill the wheel arches better (IMHO). They come up on ebay from time to time. Image taken on the way to Le Mans. |

Chris, don't let Nigel see those tyres! ha ha (see his current other thread if you don't get me) Roy, If I had £1000 lying around I would get a set of these, although my car is later so this is more an update for what was the standard wheel on my car... http://www.imagewheels.co.uk/pages/wheels_billet.html See the style "Billet 104 Classic Build" about 3/4 down the page. Oft! :-) Malcolm. |

Malcolm, I was concentrating on the wheels and trying to make out what wheels Gary had that I didn't notice the tyres, stands out like a sore thumb now you've mentioned it :) |

I've just bought a set of Revolutions from Kim at Magic Midget. Excellent service - highly recommended. I've paired them with 165/70 x13 Uniroyal Rain Experts. I think the combination suits my de-bumpered dark green Sprite IV with black hardtop. The grip is really good. The ride is as comfortable as it was with standard 3.5" rims and Avon 145s. There is still adequate clearance from the SWA bodywork at rest (RTL for lateral axle location) Theres a 1.8Kg weight saving per corner. With a bit of juggling on Jonathon at JLH's part, they fit with the 240mm front brakes I've just lashed out on. Having said all that, I really like Gary's wide steels with hub caps. I'm seriously thinking about having my 3.5's widened. I think Laurence discussed that a while ago. I didn't find anywhere local to do the work. Mk |

This is what I have....70s era american racing hurricanes http://m.ebay.com/itm/111293121720?nav=SEARCH Im also a fan of the (mag, slot, kidney) wheel Prop |

Just to note, that mine aren't widened, that how they were made. I'm not certain that banded wheels are legal, but as usual, I may be wrong. Here's a slightly better image of my wheels when I had the Avon CR322s fitted You should be able to bring up a larger version of the image. |

if not, then here's a cropped image

Gary, Thats never a good image, down town, night time, good friends, and the bonnet up, :-) I hope it wasnt serious... still a great photo just the same I have to admit, I do like that hub cap look on the froggy ....not wild about it on many other cars Prop |

Gary, nice photo, - did your Frog bit the car in front very hard or just give him a nip to be remembered by! |

Gary, were the plain steel wheels with chrome hub caps (the style of wheel I like the best on a Spridget or B) also made by Rubery Owen then (or have I missed something as usual)? |
Nigel Atkins |
Yes, Rubery Owen made the original Spridget wheels. What I was trying to point out that my 5.5J wheels are original wider ones made by then, rather than original width wheels which have been widened (banded). |
G Lazarus |
until now I didn't know the original chrome hub caps wheels were made by RO I did pick up on your point that your 5.5(J?) wheels where original and not banded and remember that the original size was 3.5(D?) as I put NOS one on my previous Spridget AH Spares at the time assured me over the phone they had four and when I went over to them at Southam I got a typical storeman's attitude of we've only got three which no explanation of where the other one went between my phone call and visit or even if it had existed - I bet it was a case of what stock the computer print-off (remember them) said against the actual physical stock plus I remember there was a very long thread on banding wheels |
