MG Midget and Sprite Technical - What is this?

I have the front suspension finished and am now working on the rear of the car.
Having purchased my '74 midget mostly dissembled and not having the advantage of being around one in a "state-of-togetherness" I have to figure some things out.

This is one of those things. In the accompanying photo there is a white plastic tee. Would someone be good enough to tell me what is supposed to connect to it?

The photo is taken from the right side of the car and the axle bump is in the lower left of the photo.

It might depend as to where the opther end goes. It certainly looks aftermarket.

Looks like the Tee for the screen wash jets. I think.

So, it seems the tee does not belong there. If that is the case then what does the hose connect to, it is in the harness and seems like it belongs? But I could be wrong about that too.

Vent hose to the carbon cannister and vapor collector in the trunk?
Trevor Jessie

my 73 had a vent line that ran through a grommet (like the one just above it in your photo) into the trunk, capped off with a t like this... i was told it was a vent? but really, i don;t know.
Chris Edwards

It is not after market but should be in the boot area having passed through a gromit
The idea is to vent the points section of the fuel pump to a safe area (inside the boot) and thus not ignite any fuel fumes around that area where the points are sparking.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Thanks. I will put it through the grommet. I like it when things are simple. At least it does not require bearings! he he

Yes, it's one of two breather T's for the fuel pump and both should be in the trunk. Look in the trunk on the right up near the rear deck panel, there should be two holes there. That's how it is on my '73.
Jon Saylor

Vent for fuel pump. The others are correct, it should go into the trunk. The sole purpose of the 'T' is to keep the tubing from slipping out. the other end of the tube should go to the spigot at the bottom of the coil housing. Its purpose is to vent air from the back side of the diaphragm to equalize the air pressure on the in and out stroke of the piston (sorry, it has nothing to do with keeping gas fumes from igniting. The spigot on the end cover (if there is one) can be left as is - there is a check valve in it to prevent air (and/or water) from being drawn in. See the article, SU Fuel Pump Vent in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Cheers - Dave
