MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wheel Change Frogeye
A couple of things: I changed my front bearings today, I purchased the kit mentioned on here, they are fantastic, the hub is now rock solid, well worth the money!. Unfortunately I am going to have to change my wheels I think, I am just not happy with the extra loading that they cause on the bearings, I have 25mm spacers on the front!, and the fact that they protrude beyond the bodywork, I also have slight rubbing still :( My main option is minilites, but I find the whole offset thing completely confusing! Can anyone here advise what will fit my frog, I am leaning towards black wheels, Hope you're all well, Rylan |
R Williams |
Can't help with your Q, but dear heavens that is one sweet car! |
RS Hughes |
The original steel wheels that you got with the car! |
Alan Anstead |
Rylan I think the narrowest you can buy is 5J The pcd for the bolt holes is IIRC 102mm That's it really. They fitted mine, although I have front disks. Not sure whether that makes any difference. I think the car had a very thin spacer on the front which I retained just to make sure the track rod end cleared. These were described as Minilite Design and came from randr-alloys.co.uk You can always try one of mine for fit! But I have to say if I were you I would revert to the steel set you have until you have had the car long enough to know you are going to have further major spends. |

Hi Rylan. Echo Alan and Graeme. That was the bounus of having them included in the purchase. Put them on, and see how you feel. Imo, even now I quite like my minilites, I still think the originals with an AH hub cap, look far better. Esp' on a Frog. As RS just said it's a sweet looking car. I like the allys, but it will look just as sweet with the original steels. Sweeter in fact. I'd also challenge your worry about the loading on the w/bearings. Why not just remove the spacers? And if it's still rubbing, go back to the people you just paid to fix that. PS. I think you are trying too hard to improve what is already near perfect. -- Looks wise. |
Lawrence Slater |
Graeme, the PCD is measured in Imperial, it may be close to the metric figure you gave but it won't be exact. |
David Smith |
101.6mm Or 4 inches. Still think it's sweet - can't stop going back to have another look :-) |
RS Hughes |
Rylan Car looks great I have these satin black 13" minilite look a likes I'm going to be fitting to mine in a week or so's time but you are quite welcome to borrow a couple or all and see what they look like or come around and try them. I am in orpington. |
Dave Pratt |
How far do they stick out? I wouldn't be that worried about 25mm spacer effect on bearings if the centre of effort of the tye tyres isn't that different. My wider tyres have the centre of effort (centre of the contact patch) in the same place as the original rostyles, even though they're 1.5 inches wider. |
Rob Armstrong |
They are JBW wheels and they fit just fine (and in the small print it says 101.6)... and they have been in use for about a year. The invoice says "102mm" Lawrence: in Rylan's case I think the problem is with the wheel profile and the trackrod ends fouling the inside face of the wheel, not a bodywork issue. |
Graeme Williams |
101.6 Dam' Euro bo++ocks! Give us back our inches, Johnnie Foreigner! Haha |
RS Hughes |
I like the four spoke revolutions on a midget. I seem to recall Magic Midget do them |
Jeremy Cogman |
I got the Revolutions from Magic Midget. Great people to do business with. Conservatively shod with 165/70 x13 Uniroyals. Good clearance on my SWA Mk IV.

M. Crossley, nice! much better than your profile photo! Flip |
Flip Brühl |
Ha Flip, thanks. Flattering low resolution pic of tatty car with posh wheels! Mark |
M Crossley |
Ah Thanks Graeme. Is it a lock issue then? Do they rub in a straight line? I didn't see/notice that, when I drove it before Rylan bought it. Shame. I rather like those wheels. I do prefer originals, but if your going ally, those are nicer than minilites, to my eyes. |
Lawrence Slater |
I think the problem which can occur Lawrence is that if the whell offset towards the car centre line is too great, the track rod end has to fit within the inside rim. If the offset is too great the track rod end can foul the rim. I found with mine that because they were balanced inside the rim, the balance weight fouled the track rod end so I had to unstick the weight and move it in a bit. Even so, on track rod end just rubbed the rim so I had to take a bit of the rod end with a file. |
