MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wheel offset

Having measured my own Minator wheels, the offset seems to be in the region of ET19 - ET20 5J X R13.

Has anyone fitted ET30 or anything in that region, i.e. a wheel which as more of the wheel tyre assembly inside the wheel centreline, closer to body / suspension parts?

Cheers

You would probably have problems clearing the track rod ends, even with normal offset alloys the nuts are very very close.

Hi Roy,

Thanks for that,

I think the TRE's will be OK as even at ET20 they are already 'inside' (if you understand what I mean) the wheel so the offset shouldn't change that

watch out for balancing thingees though, my TRE's knocked them right off the inside (I had sticky on ones). Had to stick them back on again a bit further in - seems to be OK but the change in distance from where the machine says they should be would be larger for a wider wheel. It might still be OK though, just something to think about

I get tyre wall touching leaf spring using 175 Yoko 48s on 5J Minators.

Rob,

Yes thanks for that as you say it is a problem across the board with alloys

David,

Yes you are right, I forgot about the rear as I was mainly thinking about the front (I won't be using leaf springs)

I can probably add some infill (or something similar) to the Minators on the front to assess if the inside of the tyre or wheel hits the inner arch (or anything else I haven't thought of)

The main unknown is if the whole spoke area manages not to hit the caliper or anything else axially.

But lots of FWD cars run this kind of offset or more on the steered axle, looks like I just need to find a wheel probably 100mm PCD and tickle the PCD to fit the midget just for mock purposes and then see if there is anything available off the shelf if it suits.

what does the ET stand for?

Dave,

Well I can't pretend I knew before you asked, but a quick Google gave:

"The offset is described by the term ET, which is from the German word 'Einpresstiefe' translated as 'insertion depth'."

Looking back through the BBS archives (again, I must have missed it first time) it seems a 4.5J Rostyle is around ET38 which explains a lot to me now.

I have done some geometry meddling and I was suprised to see how high the scrub radius is with the 5J Minator wheels that I have, but the factory wheels / offsets are far more sensible so I will more than likely go to a more suitable offset when I get some new wheels
