MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wheel studs
Any thoughts on the quality and availability of replacement rear wheel studs and recommended suppliers? Removing my rear brake drums shows that the studs are bent, probably from years of overtightening the wheelnuts by others. Cheers Mike |

No real issues ive seen conserning wheel studs other then as you mention ham fisted.wheel guys applying 30,000 ft lbs of torque when replacing tires Id say just your run of the mill 3/8 inch midget wheel stud and your good to go... id proba bly even replace the lug nuts as well for good measure if the studs are badly worn as indicated |

minispares sell them. I've got a variety of sizes on my car. (well, the rears are longer than the fronts) |

Mike, Is your car fitted with Rostyles or has it had them fitted in the past, those are the only wheels I've seen that suffer from bending due to over tightening. If so best to check all the studs as the bending can lead to them cracking. |

Consider changing them and the nuts. I recently had a couple of failures on the rear of my Frog. They are cheap. Simon |

Yes, echo the remarks that they are cheap and easy to fit. Having sheared a couple myself, I can also vouch for the fact that they are surprisingly easy to shear...moral of the story being to follow procedure and use a correctly set torque wrench. |

If the studs are bent inwards then it usually means that the wheels themselves have been warped through overtightening, and thus replacing the studs but re using the wheel bends the new studs in the same manner, even if correctly torqued. Thankfully Rostyles are cheap to replace and Minilites are always a welcome upgrade :) |

That's one of the reasons I changed to Minators on the race car - I couldn't find enough straight Rostyles. |

What length front & rear wheel studs are suggested for use with Minilite style alloys? I currently have bolt-on adaptors for wire wheels which use cut down studs & I'll be ditching these in favour of 14" alloys. Thanks |

I felt that the standard studs were too short for Minators, so I fitted standard rears to the front hubs and Mini Cooper studs to the rear - ISTR that they were 1/4" longer than standard rears. |

were you using wheel spacers Dave? |
David Smith |
No. |

I used the standard studs when I fitted my minilites, although I did fit new ones. I get 12 turns of the nut from starting, to nipped up, which I think is adequate. I believe the standard practice is that the thread engagement should be at least one and a half times the stud diameter. The standard studs meet this. Dave |
