MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Which camshaft should I use?

Ok now that it looks like the block is comming apart. I am thinking its time for a cam. I would like one thats realitively inexpensive, ground on a new blank, and set up to give more power, but no real loss in streetability (i.e. it has to still idle moothly at around 1000 rpm).

I dont like kent because I think they are all regrinds

The swiftune SW5-07 looks a bit appealing but I knw nothing about it.

APT has a few options too

I dont think Crane makes anything for a-series cars.

S.A.,

I used a VP-7 from APT, along with offset rocker bushings. I like it.

I did not pick the cam. I told them what I had done to the engine, how I wanted it to act, and let them pick the cam.

Because I was autocrossing with an original transmission with no 1st syncro, I told them I wanted it to rev freely, but not power peak too high, and to have power down low so that second gear would have a chance to pull the car out of a slow turn.

This was 10 years ago, so I can't promise that the VP-7 is still the same, or even still made. You will have to ask if it is new or reground. I think a lot of their cams are available either way.

sounds like you want the sw5

it is a real good cam and would most certanly make you happy

there are other alternatives (morspeed ph2 for example)

but what do you use the midget for how hard do you rev it etc

Careful Seth,

I once stood at the intersecting rings of earth, heaven and the aybss and I to took enjoyment at the thought of attaining "The Virus" that you now seek as you look upon the lanscape from which I once gazzed.

I cant tell you what to do, but this journey WILL not stop with just a camshaft...it never does.

That said the only place to purchase a SW5 camshaft in the states is al 7 interpise...and its on sale ...but Id go directly to the source and get a the complete kit, it will save a bunch of broken piggy banks

BTW...My understanding is you really need the 1.5 roller tipped rockers to get the most out of the SW5...Ill let you know in a month or so.

Welome to the "Virus" Its only cash

Calver's cam Short duration could do good job if you want a cam to improve the torque:

clik on Engine categorie to see the cams

or the Piper Hight torque HR255

thrust me the re13ot is to wild

the cam is freakin genius but not for someone who wants a bit more power and a nice idle
(idle is just slightly less bad than with a 286)

hey seth,

according to your other post, you do know your going to possiable need a new engine???

yes. Teh block is getting decked hot tanked and bored out .020 over essentially it will be a new engine
S.A. Jones

so just a rebuild than?
no need for a new block or anny thing?
Onno Könemann

"no need for a new block or anny thing?"

Nope, and I'm going with the SW5-07
S.A. Jones

cool seth,

Thats what Im going with also, are you going to use the high lift roller tipped rockers? I hear thats what really makes that cam come alive. Are you doing just the cam or are you getting one of the kits, are you going straight to the source or going to 7 enterprise? The one thing that appealed to me is that they are a subsideary of and owned by "Kent" camshaft so they got alot of knowledge and history behind them not to mention that there new CNC machine there using to grind out new cams is the same one used to make formula 1 camshafts with also. just a really great company, from what ive seen and had an experiance with.

cant wait to install, and drive...VROOOM,Vroom

take the kit with the roler rockers and timing stuff
it may seem expensive but
you need the folowers and springs to keep the cam in good shape
And without the timing gear and the roler rockers you realy are not getting the best from you cam
Onno Könemann

Oh I plan on using the stock springs, and rockers for now, but I can always upgrade later if need be. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Anyhow, the guys at 7 said that the midget dual springs are plenty na that if you make the springs too strong you put more force on the cam lobes and wear out the cam faster than if you have weaker springs. The downside is that weaker springs can lead to valve float. As long as the valve float happens above 6000 rpm I really don't care because i never rev my engine that high anyhow. Actually knowing that they are a subsidiary of Kent is a bit worrisome. Kent sells reginds through vikky brit and I hate the idea of regrinds. Swiftune however is a british company with 40+ years of race prepping a series engines. If only downton was around.
