MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Which Disk Pads

Hi All

I am looking to improve my brakes, I fitted new callipers, goodrich hoses and aftermarket pads and shoes, I am thinking that an easy improvement to braking efficiency would be to change the pads, what would be the best pads for me to upgrade to? green stuff or Mintex or other??

Thanks for your help

If you decide on greenstuff, I've got a spare set that I don't need.

Give Kim at magicmidget a call
He has verry good non grooved disks (yes there is a difference plain disks!) add to that a set of mintex 1144 pads and you will be sorted.

Do not go for green stuff
Lots of dust
Minimal braking improvement
(sorry Dave For spoiling your deal)

I've got standard brakes (with Goodrich s/s hoses) front and rear except Mintex 1144 pads and I lock the front wheels up

don't forget old tyres regardless of tread may not be helping your braking, or steering, roadholding, ride noise and comfort

Onno, Nigel
Thanks for the replies, I will replace the pads with Mintex 1144 pads first as I replaced the disks with aftermarkets about a year ago so hopefully I will get the same performance out of the Mintex pads as Nigel, if not I will then move for the replacement disks as Onno suggests. My rear tyres are getting on a bit so I might move the fronts to the rear and get new tyres for the front.

Dave thanks for the offer of the green stuff pads.

Onno, still no problem with green stuff, but it's NOS. Seems they changed.

Has anyone tried EBC Yellow Stuff pads? I have Green Stuff on my BV8 and they are OK but lack that initial bite. According to what I read, Yellow Stuff might be better.
Mike Howlett

Yellows are a rcae pad - not sure whether they'd be OK for road use? Might only work when hot....
David Smith

Not so David. This is from EBC web site

EBC Yellowstuff is an aramid fibre based brake compound with high brake effect form cold and is possibly one of the first ever compounds that can be used for STREET AND TRACK DRIVING. These pads do not require warm up but do get even stronger under the heat of hard driving. These are not a low dust pad and if your desire is for a low dust premium street use pad, you should consider EBC Redstuff.
Mike Howlett

what's good for the track use isn't always also good for the roads

EBC is a local company to me so I'm not saying anything against it but a mate who used to worked for Pagid Performance Brakes used to rage against the tests done for Green Stuff a few years back
Nigel Atkins

fair enough - I will say from experience EBC have certainly improved the compound for GreenStuff several times over the last 15 years, I guess that applies to Yellows and other as well.
David Smith

it was a few years back so Green Stuff and the other products could have changed and improved a lot

as you know some pepole may believe if it's good on a track car then it must be very good on a 'fast road' car and this isn't always the case

it'd be nice to have pads that work well on the road and don't dirty the wheels after a quick morning road run
Nigel Atkins

I changed from standard pads (MGOC) to EBC Green Stuff about a year ago. They were a h**l of a job to fit and I never did get the sticky backed anti squeal things on! That said, breaking (road use only) has improved - less fade at least on heavy braking, and I also have to say that my experience is that there's much less dust produced than I had with the previous pads.

Rimmer bros have a great deal on the Mintex 1144 pads £18 inc VAT, the service was excellent,I am just about to fit them so should see the improvement in the next few days if it stops raining long enough for me to test drive.

nice price don't forget to bed them in
