MG Midget and Sprite Technical - which fuel pump for an S.U. setup

I switched to a set of S.U. carbs on my '78 1500 midget last year. Worked great for a while, until it started spraying my engine bay with gasoline.
The problem was that my non-S.U. fuel pump was putting out more fuel than the carbs could handle.
A fuel regulator seems to have fixed things, but I am wondering if I should ultimately switch to an S.U. fuel pump. Any advice for me?

Are you running the stock mechanical fuel pump? Some of the newer Rover-branded (boxed) fuel pumps being sold for the 1500 develop too much pressure. I have a new one that spewed fuel right past the float in the Weber DGV. Re-installed the old pump and problem solved. A properly regulated 1500 fuel pump (as you apparently now have) should supply adequate fuel to your carbs. Sounds like your problem is already fixed.

Yes - it's an aftermarket mechanical -- with similar hurricane force to yours, apparently. I am hoping you're right about the problem being fixed. But I started to wonder after weeks of a-ok motoring when I again started to get a whiff of petrol and had to dial the regulator's fuel flow down another notch. No problems since so I'm hoping it was just a matter of fine-tuning the setting on the regulator.

You could change over to an AUF 214 SU electric pump (Moss P/N 377-175 or 377-285 for the all electronic version as used with the 1098 and 1275 engined cars) and not have to fuss with a regulator. You can also get one of the little square, run all the time, make a lot of noise, Facet pumps. As long as you get the low pressure version, it too, will work fine without a regulator. Cheers - Dave

The OEM SU pump for a midget is 3.8psi. Anything 2.5psi to 4psi should work fine.

D,

Had the same issue as you with a replacement (QH) mechanical fuel pump. Installed a regulator (Holley 12-804) and set is to 3psi and all is fine now. Have heard of problems with the Purolator regulators, but have no personal experience.
