MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Who has air horns on their Mk1?

I'm fed up with my little squeaky horn on my Frogeye. I like a big horn! Has anyone fitted air horns to their Mk1? Does the fact that the Mk1 is positive earth cause a problem? I would run it through a relay.

Ha Ha. I like it.

I think a second horn might have been an opitional extra on a Frogeye (IIRC?)

On a more serious note - I think you can make it work on a +ve earth car - you may need to isolate the pump from the body -if the one you choose uses the mount as an earth path ...

But its definately do-able - I had something like this on a very old Beetle years ago...

twin horns with good wiring and good connections are quite loud
Nigel Atkins

Neil, I can sympathise with your small horn syndome. However Nigel has something - I can recall the air horns I installed many years ago - they sound quite high pitched - and probably dated now. ( no not just because they are old - I mean in general)

I think a good set of twin tone horns would do the job nicely and give a more manly sound..

I'll have a looksie in my local motor factors tomorrow. I think small cars need to make a big sound. They get ignored otherwise.

Switch to -ve it will make these jobs a lot more easy.

I have fitted an old beetle horn (hella or bosch round metal thing) and it is plenty loud.
So a switch to an other normal horn might also have the effect you are after

I replaced the twin horns on my car with the lucas branded plastic bodied versions as sold by the David Manners [and most other good suppliers I suspect].

Previously they were horizontaly mounted on brackets and partially obstructed the airflow to the radiator. The new ones were mounted, without brackets, vertically on the insides of the radiator shroud just below the grille opening with the mouth facing the radiator. With careful positioning, the existing wiring will still reach. And they are LOUD.
