MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Windscreen frame refurbishment
Has anyone out there tried to restore a midget windscreen frame? I was just wondering if the aluminium frame could be rubbed down, polished and then lacquered - has anyone had good results? - thanks - Neal |

there's a specialist that sells concours standard refurbished screens so it is do-able but I've no idea exactly how they do it... |

The windscreen frame on my MGB has been rubbed down and polished. No laquer, just a coat of wax when the car is polished. Still nice and shiny and better looking than most after nine years or so. The enclosed cut out from a larger picture is not very good, but may give you an impression. Personally I find polished aluminium much more attractive than the factory finish, so I will do the same thing to the windscreen and door mouldings on my Midget Mk 1. You can remove the factory coating with liberal quantities of oven cleaner. Tore |

I had mine polished. The guy who did it said the anodised layer will come off but when polished you only have to rub it with a yellow kitchen wipe (you know what type I mean) and its shiny again and yes he's right. Bas |

Neal. I did my mk3 Sprite screen frame two years ago as the annodised parts ie. the horizontals were looking a bit rough. I did it with wet and dry paper, getting ever finer as I went along. The uprights are quite easy to do but the annodised bits were quite tough. I finished them off with Autoglym metal polish and I was very pleased with the outcome. Be careful not to scratch the glass with the rubbing down paper and you should be ok. Bernie. |

I've polished up my door cappings, used one of these on an angle grinder: http://www.moleroda.com/acatalog/info_1141.html I found it absolutely brilliant. Abrasive enough to do it's job, but not so abrasive that you end up struggling not to cut the workpiece in half. Leaves a good finish that you can then polish up with metal polish of some sort. I was pleased with the results, and will be using it again next time some of my aluminium needs brightening up. |

that looks like a good piece of kit - did you use the 400 grit Mark? |
