MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Windscreen Frame Rubbers

I wonder if anyone can help me with a question I have regarding the rubber seals that the quarter lights seal against when the door is shut.

I have bought new ones from Moss but the pictures I took of the old rubbers in place aren't good enough for me to see which is the correct way round they go.

Also I could do with a picture of the rivet installation that retains the rubber - I shall be using an M4 button head instead of a rivet though.

Hi Martyn.

Here's a snap of the seal I think you're asking about on my car ('78 1500).
My Moss book says it's the same seal and retaining bracket for SpriteIII/midgetII and for SpriteIV/MidgetIII (1500) but you don't say what your car is.

The photo obviously shows the driver's side and the retaining brackets are handed. I don't think the rubbers are though.

It seems the rubbers are installed after rivetting the retainers the windshield frame so I can't photograph them without pulling out the rubbers.

They slide in quite easily if you put some talcum powder on the rubber and then slide it in from the top of the channel

or a bit of silicone lube, they slide in easy.

I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be cut down or not so I cut one and left the other... :-D

that pic suggests cut flush with the screen. the one I didn't cut sticks up about an inch.

Yep Malcolm - mine are cut flush with the top of the windshield frame. Plus I have reason to believe they are factory original.

By the bye can I suggest you don't let silicon lube near anything you might want to paint in the future. I learned this the hard way from refinishing yachts. The silicon contamination is nearly impossible to remove and no paint will tolerate it AFAIK. It's great stuff right enough, but I'm cautious where I use it.

I like Guy's idea of talcum powder. Makes sense to me.

Are they cut at an angle on the bottom to match the angle of the aluminium channel.

By the way I drilled and tapped the rivet holes to M4 instead of riveting - much easier to remove if needed.

Did the same only M5 on all the bracketry on the windscreen as well

Okay Martyn - I had a look at the rubber. I think it must be factory-original as it has a very different profile to the bottom 4 to 5 inches. It reckon it was specifically moulded for the car and not cut off a roll as replacement rubbers might be.
I speculate maybe the extra lump is to reduce slamming when closing the door. Smth like that.

So not much help to you I'm afraid. Soz.

I left my screen rubbers with a "tail" at the bottom,about 2 1/2" that tucks into the void in front of the door and in front of the extra offcut piece that shows in GB's photo. In heavy rain water runs down the windscreen seal and by extending it at the bottom it ensures it runs down and off at the lower end with no chance of it being blown back past the inner seal by pressure of the wind.

What I refer to as the offcut on mine at the top is tucked in under the end of the crash rail, so there is no cut end showing.

Greybeard, I needed to be able to get stainless steel countersunk screws of the shelf not wait months for a UNF equivalent :-)

plus I have loads of metric taps but not quite so many imperial ones
