MG Midget and Sprite Technical - windsrceen wiper sweep
Hi All, I hope some one out there knows the answer to this problem. I have just fitted a round bodied wiper motor that I had in stock. I dont know from where. It over sweeps the windscreen so that it comes over the windscreen rubber by an inch at each end of the sweep. I vaguely remember that there are different quadrants within the wiper body Is this the case and can I change it or better still modify the one I have got. Thanks for any help with this infuriating niggle. Simon |

There are different cogs for inside the motor body. The number of degrees sweep is noted on the large white cog. Some one will come by shortly and tell us what number is std. Or i could try and find the book it is in. Or you could buy is as it is aparantley writen by one of our favorit forum members ;) |

If you take the plate cover off the motor to expose the large gear wheel, it should have the degrees of sweep marked on it. According to Brown & Gammons web site, the midget should have gear no. 608092A, and according to the Minispares web site, this is a 110 degree sweep and should have 46 teeth. New wheels are available for about £25. You can't alter the sweep without changing this wheel. I believe they are made in various sweep angles from 90 to about 125 degrees. Actually I'm surprised it is as much as 110 degrees. I think the mgb roadster is only 105, although the MGBGT is more like 120. |

Simon, If when you check under the wiper motor plate, you find that it has a 110 stamped drive wheel, then the other possibility is that you have it matched with the wrong wiper spindle wheelboxes. There were two variations of these which superficially look the same but have different numbers of teeth. The correct ones should have 32 teeth, part no 72775A - at least for the 1275 cars. I use a 120 degree crank wheel as it gives a better sweep with slight blade overlap which avoids leaving a little gap in the centre of the screen. And they don't hit the rubbers at the ends of the sweep. |

Have you got the correct wiper blades fitted? If they are too long, they will hit the rubber at the end of the upsweep. |

I replaced the 110 deg gear in my motor with a 130 deg to maximise the area of sweep as shown below. Availabe from SVC [and probably others]. Ref Guy's note about the wheelbox From the MGOC website Wiper wheel box 37H7738 Later 1275 and all 1500 models with Lucas 14W type 'Round Body' motor (G-AN4-60460 on; G-AN5; G-AN6; H-AN9-72041 on; H-AN10; A-AN10) Wiper wheel box 37H6316 Early 1275 models with Lucas DR3A type 'Square Body' motor (to G-AN4-60459; to H-AN9-72040) HTH |

Hi Onno, Simon knows all about the book because his car is in it. Maybe he has sold his copies on ebay? 105 for US 3 wiper cars, 110 UK cars, 120 for more sweep - page 139 of the edition with colour photos.. |
